Lower miles on z class ticket?

Hello,

I booked a UC sales fare to LA recently (Z class) and was informed I'd earn 16K miles. Since all the Z's have sold out the miles now allocated for the same ticket (D class) are 21K. Looked into it on the earning calculator and it seems there is a lowest upper class and upper class now.

Did this change ages ago and I just didn't notice? It wasnt always like this was it?

It seems Virgin are constantly making it harder and harder to earn miles.

It changed earlier this year.

All the lower end fares (in all cabins) no longer earn the full mileage they did last year.

How on earth VS can still call their frequent flyer program, and I quote from the VS web site 'the most generous reward programme in the sky'. I dont think so!!!

Have you seen what level of mileage you earn on BA or BMI for the lower fares classes? [:w] Makes VS look extremely generous.

You could spin it another way, why should a lower fare earn as many miles as a higher fare?

From reading Flyertalk - I think just about all UK, European and US airlines have been 'realigning' mileage levels - or increasing the number required for rewards. VS certainly aren't the worst example of this.

I keep my eye on my options and, right now, I would still call the Flying Club the best for the routes I want to fly.

IF VS really wanted to cut back on the miles out there in people's accounts, I would have thought credit card and other partner earning would be the easiest place to start the pruning.

Or simply check the accounts of famous TV presenters for any excess activity.... [:w]

When the changes were announced I cribbed about the reduction of miles for Z fares until I realised I paid less for my Z fare in the UC sale than the price of a W fare. Sort of put things into perspective.

Further to what honey lamb has said - for my upcoming MCO round trip, I've only paid a shade over 90 more for my return Z fare than the current price that Virgin are offering full Y fare tickets for on the same flights.

That's all fair enough but I remember when Virgin 1st brought in 50% miles for N class and I thought that was a shame. Now it's been introduced accross all cabins I think it's slightly taken the shine off the flying club for me and I imgine a lot of others.
