So I've just had my morning made! A bit of context first:

I'm travelling to DEN next month via JFK. Was able to bag a G for the LHR-JFK sector a couple of weeks ago, but with my JFK-DEN flight coming in at nearly 5 hours I really didn't want to be stuck in Y, and a Delta Comfort seat was coming in at £57. Cue a call to VS towers to ask about upgrading the DL leg to Business. Quoted £700-odd as they weren't able to do it without switching my VS leg to back a Z rather than a G.
Quoted the same price when asking at the VS ticketing desk at T3. Starting to give up hope, all the while keeping an eye on the DL flight and seeing the Y+ seats drying up (only 6 out of 18 left at the time of writing). What made it even worse is that J was completely empty, and the DL site was quoting only a $140 price difference between Y and J.

So this morning I decided to give it one more shot. Rang the gold line, explained what I needed and was put on hold. After nearly 10 minutes on hold the lady finally returned back to what was music in my ears. The upgrade was possible... at no additional cost. Keeping my G to JFK, and going up to Z on the DL leg. No idea how... but I'll take that!!

Just checked on MMB and it's saying Z, so now I'm just waiting for my (seventh) e-ticket to come through!

Well done Slimpy - persistence does pay!

I don't know what FC status you are, but as an FC Gold, I get good treatment on Delta internal flights these days. I can book Y+ comfort seats at no charge in advance and I also find myself automatically on the upgrade list at the gate. Last week I was upgraded to J on a shortish internal flight from SEA-SJC.

In fact from an upgrade perspective, I get treated better on Delta than on Virgin Atlantic flights :-O

I'm FC Gold, and this will be my second set of flights with DL as a Gold, but my first in J. I've been able to book Y+ seats previously but only 72 hours in advance for recent flights, I think there's been a rule change along those lines. Nice going on your Op-Up though!
If there's enough to cover I'll certainly try and do a trip report for this sector as there's a meal service slated and this will be my longest DL flight.
