I need a hotel for one night on my trip to NYC in August.

Convenient to JFK, preferrably with a shuttle service and in an area where I can smoke outside at no risk!

3.5 star or better!

Anyone have any recommendations based on experience? (Crown Plaza looks olike an option from initial research...)

I stayed at the Hampton which felt a little bit sketchy (as many budget US airport hotels tend to) - there's a Hilton next door though.

Trouble with JFK is the hotel shuttles aren't allowed to pick up outside the terminals, you have to catch the air train to Federal Circle and pick them up there so if you time it wrong the door to door journey can be long.

It's worth looking slightly further out - eg Jamaica which is directly linked to the terminals via the air train, thus eliminating the need to rely on potentially unreliable shuttle buses.

JFK worst major airport I know for decent hotels - period.
Have stayed at a few - Hilton JFK IMHO is the best but barely 3.5 star. Don't think any are higher.
It does have a pool and I've been upgraded to a suite twice with Hilton Gold.
The shuttle from the airport is hit and miss - consider a taxi. From the hotel back to terminal it's fine and reliable.

I've stayed quite a few times at the Hilton JFK. It's pretty solid. Never had any shuttle issues though of course you do need to pick it up at Federal Circle though the shuttle will drop you at your terminal of choice on check out of the hotel.

The Executive lounge if you have Hilton status or book an Executive level room is pretty good. A generous breakfast (of hot and cold items), packaged snacks and soft drinks throughout the day and complimentary wine and beer, with a small selection of hot and cold canapés in the evening from 6pm-9pm.

Ive also stayed at the Fairfield Inn which I would suggest you avoid.

I am with horburyflyer - albeit that all the Airport Hotels are nothing worth shouting home about, either being perched above a freeway or in the middle of a residential area.

If you have status with Hilton then the stay can be softened, but the point about the shuttle from Federal Circle needs to be factored in.

I stayed at the Crowne Plaza when I had a late arrival then an early start. Room was ok, basic but clean. Food at the bar wasn't great, but it was handy. I called the hotel when I got on the air train and the shuttle arrived within minutes of getting to Federal Circle. No issues in the morning getting it back to the terminal.

Have you ruled out Manhattan? The Renaissance Midtown is very handy for the LIRR, then just a 25 min ride to the airport.

;-( Thanks everyone, I'm getting the message on hotel options.

Perhaps time to re-think my strategy.

I am attending an event in Glen Cove, Long Island from the day after I arrive at JFK.

My plan was to stay at/near the airport with little fuss, then get a taxi/Uber down to Glen Cove the next day.

A better option, then, might be for me to take a taxi straight down to LI and stay near Glen Cove for that night, I can then have a short hop to Glen Cove mansion when I'm good to go the next day.

So, suggestions near Glen Cove anyone!!!??
