I agree that premium pax may take more notice on what they are flying, but i would wager that the bulk of pax on their annual holiday run won't take any notice at all, unless of course the kids take a particular interest. I know a number of frequent business flyers, and to them flying is a necessary evil, but one they take as little notice of as possible.

Before I found you guys and developed an avid interest I've always been interested in which plane I'm flying on, I usually look at the nose or the safety leaflet to tell me!

Majoritively I've flown 737's as they're the budget airlines and the short haul ones - flew Virgin Sun with one of them before!

However I did a DC - 10 to Tunisia, 3 B777's to Perth and back and an Airbus A330 back from Perth on the second leg.

Personally I prefer Boeing.

When we were coming back from Dubai on the second leg from Perth it felt alot more rocky and unsecure - even though it's not it just felt it! I also much prefer the bins on any Boeing over an Airbus.

The DC was the first wide-body I'd done and was most excited about being on a 777!

I think I may have done some other Airbusses but I really can't remember!

If you sit around in areas that view runway many people chatter amooungst their fellow travlers/family and very often you will hear is that a jumbo??? being said more often than no its a 777 or a340 that they are looking at especially at LGW but you do get the feeling especially if a jumbo then comes in to view that thats what they want to fly on.
Ihave heard these types of conversations on many many occasions especially in the smoking areas but i have never yet heard somone saying is that a 777 or an a340 its always the jumbo.
LONG LIVE THE 747 AS PART OF THE VIRGIN FLEET

1. Virgin Sun never had any 737s so you couldn't have been on one from them.

2. Alastair, your unsecure flight was probably caused by turbulance, there's no reason that it should have felt that way simply because it was an airbus.

2. I hate to say it, but unfortunately the 747 will be the first aircraft to leave the fleet when the 343s are gone, so unless VS orders new 744s or 748s they won't be living very long.

I feel that with VS, the A346 is a much better plane overall. Other than PE, I think that it is pretty much on par or better than on a 744. In Y, the 2-4-2 configuration is a lot better for couples and means that your chance of a window seat is higher which I'm sure is a major factor for quite a lot of people.
Secondly, in J, once you're in your suite, you can't see much else - especially if it's reclined - so you can't really tell what plane you're on anyway.:)

I like flying, and don't really care which type i'm on, but in Y I admit I much prefer the 2-4-2 arrangement on the bus.
I've flown a 777 many times to LAX, ORD and PEK and felt it was good, but after a horribly cramped flight in the middle seat of 3 I vowed never again on a 777 at least in Economy. BA's loss, Virgin's gain! [:o)]
Saying that, I do prefer the headrest arrangement on BA's long haul fleet, regardless of type. They are a lot more supportive of your head flopping sideways than the flexi thingys on virgin.

The same of course can be said about a 747, it's just i've never had the misfortune of being in the middle of three on one! And now I know about the 2 down the back, If I'm ever on one again in Y I'll try and bag those.

I'm tending to reserve my ire for deliberate polluters who show no manners in not making an effort rather than people who transgress infrequently and accidentally :). The same way as in any mixed social event you'd try not to speak in your broadest dialect if you wanted people around you to understand you or to help you.

Back on subject, who said that..couldn't of been me [:0]

For personal choice I prefer the 744 over anything as long as im sitting upstairs or upfront. However if im sitting in the back give me the 777 anytime, since my first CO777 flight im still amazed at how quiet that plane is with those massive engines.

I hope, though doubt, that VS will order some 748's,I may well end up on BA if rumors of course they order them, just to see what it's like,of course in the end it will still be a long flight, but there is something special about the 747 series.

I think that the 747 is an amazing piece of engineering, especially if you consider the aircraft around at the time. Actually, come to think of it, manufacturers were a lot more adventerous in its time - with concorde etc. Then, planes were built out of a love of flying, now it's the domain of bean counters.[:(]

BTW, we all think you do a great job Decker:D[y]

I could not agree with you more i think it would be a very sad day if the 747 ever dissapeared from the V-A fleet. I am looking forward to the new 800 series hope virgin order some :D

Point of Information: It's the -8 series not the -800 series.

Yep, thats why I made it a POI. I don't know why Boeing took off the stupid zeros though. 747-8 just looks wrong. [:(!]

can any knowledgable person out there explain where the -nnn 's come from in an aircraft type, what they signify and whether there is any consistancy amongst both manufacturers and amongst types from the same manf?
And yes, also explain why the 747-8 is not -800

Hi PVG,

It's where it's a derivitive of the "master" aircraft. Sometimes, it indicates it's age - ie: a 737-400 is a newer model than the 737-200. On other occasions, it indicates something technical (ie: A340-600 is the long one, A340-500 is the long RANGE one). Boeing also generate "F" models for freight operations.

However, in each case, the "template" aircraft is still a 737 or 340, respectively. The models are just "tweaks" of the same design.

In terms of who/how/when they decided to use the 100, 200, 300 logic, no idea - but it's done for the same reason cars get new model/spec numbers. (ie: BMW 520/523/525/530, then SE, IS, M)

The two recent weird ones are the 747-8 (where's the 00?) and the Airbus A380-800. (Why not start at 100, and give yourself room to introduce new models?!)

thanks preiffer

I'm glad to see it's not only me who doesn't see the logic in it;)

I suppose it's like software versions a few years ago, when word for windows jumped to version 6 from version 2 just because wordperfect was already at version 6!
