Yup - Soon, it'll be the A380-2007, and the 747-2010 ;)

Usually the last two numbers, say the XX in 747-4XX are reserved for the customer code for boeings and the engine code for airbuses. My only thought is that the 747-8 will still have the customer code and once the first ones are delivered they will still be looked as 747-8Q8 (for VS), but that still doesn't explain why they removed the 00.

Actually VS' code is 1R - all the 747-4Q8's are leased, which is why bmi baby have 737-3Q8's for example.

I believe only VXLG, VWOW, VROC and possibly VAST are actually owned by VS.

Interesting about the nn numbers at the back of the Airbus model number being engine codes, didn't realise that. Knew about the Boeing customer codes Q8, R1, etc. Not very logical, as it goes to pot when aircraft sold on, eg VS' old 742s! Also doesn't really specify much about the aircraft as one customer could have the same model, e.g. B747-400 with different engines and a different spec, as do Air New Zealand I beieve. Didn't realise VS owned as many 744s as that, thought there were only two, rest leased. I believe the A340s all leased (some from Airbus themselves?). Any info on who actually owns VS planes?
Must remove anorak now![:?]

Think i opend a nest when i mistakingly put 747- 800 i have sent an e mail to boeing asking where the 00 is gone from the 747-8 and also asked them to explain the significance of the 00 to put the record streight.
i will post their reply as and when and indeed if i get one.[8D]

It appears by looking on the Boeing website that virgin Atlantic may own 9 of their 747-400 aircraft and the other 5 are on lease sorry I donÕt know which individual aircraft they are

Yeah, sorry about that. Q8 are the leased ones, 1R are the bought ones, and 43 are the cancelled Alitalia orders.

VS are only currently listed as owning G-VAST, G-VFAR & G-VXLG (FROM UK CAA website)& that doesn't mean they own the engines as they are on seperate lease agreements along with the APU's. The last two digits varies on a few VS operated aircraft as they didn't originally order them!!

VS are still paying for these damn A346s

It looks like they're aiming towards an A380 and A346 fleet.
Those A346s are such fuel guzzlers.

VS would have been better with an B747-8 and B777-300ER Fleet

Ordering the A346 was a bad move for VS

And yes, also explain why the 747-8 is not -800

It's full name is the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental (747-8i)

It's 747-8 because of the technology it shares with Boeing's dreamliner: the 787

That's not his question.

I think the fact that it only has one number is meant to signify a new era and send a message to potential clients that the new 747 isn't just, say a longer version of the -400.
As tommy212 said, the -8 shows that it has ideas from the 787 and if it was -800, the effect would be lost.

Cheers,
