Oh, it's dead easy to understand. You take a stick with a funny knob at the end - some people actually take up to 14 of these sticks in a bag they carry on their back - and you go for a 2-3 mile walk whacking a little white ball from time to time and swearing occasionally. For some reason the 2-3 mile walk which takes any normal person about an hour to complete can take 4 and even 5 hours. Sometimes there are funny little cars to drive but for some reason it still takes the same length of time to go the 2-3 miles

At the end of the game everyone goes to the bar and starts telling everyone else just what happened on that 2-3 mile walk and that too takes 4 and even 5 hours........

....unless the raconteur gets a phone call and a voice screaming "Where the **** are you?" is heard whereupon that is the signal to pack up and go home.

I've also heard tell of extra people, people who carry around said bags full of sticks - they don't do anything else, just trail around after the people who hit the round things with funny sticks. Thanks for the offer. At this stage I'm not sure of what we're doing. We arrive in LHR at about 16:00 and by the time we have picked up John's golf bag and organised the car rental (which I never done at LHR before so don't know how long that will take) I'm sure it will be nearly 17:00 before we hit the M4.

We are staying in the Best Western Angel in Chippenham which according to the AA Route Planner is 1 hour 40 minutes away. Mind you the same Route Planner has the Manor House 1 hour 50 minutes away but the Manor House website has LHR 1 hour away. I suppose a lot depends on the traffic. When we get there I will do a dummy run to the Manor House rather than trying to find my way in the middle of whatever rush hour is there and John will go for a swim. We will also get something to eat and really that will take care of the evening. He will want to go to bed relatively early as he will want to get to the Manor House first thing to register and to get breakfast and since there is only an hour between registration and his tee time it doesn't leave much time for the practice range.

As I suspected, the organisers have confirmed with me that no guests are allowed - I got in last year at the end simply because I had to collect him - so I have to make myself scarce. Last time I was able to go into London to meet a friend but this time it won't be possible so I shall probably take myself off to Bath for a scout around. I've never been there so it should be interesting. Any tips greatly appreciated. [:X]

Lunch is from 15:00 on and I suspect it is a buffet. Last time there was a barbecue but that was in October but it is rather too chilly for that right now. Actually a lot of people left before the barbecue last year and there was a huge amount of food left over. I think having food available for when people come off the course is probably better. Prize giving is expected to be at 17:00 and whether or not he wins anything on the day he will be presented with a trophy from his October win. After that we must head for LHR as we are booked on the 22:15 flight to ORK That gets in at 23:30 and then we have a 40 minute drive home so I guess there will be two tired people crashing down in West Cork that night. I, unfortunately, have to go to work the next day. I suspect I shall be there in body if not in spirit, but Aer John possibly has the option of not going in to school as there is a trip for his class to visit University College Cork. While, he is considering going there he still has one more year of school so it isn't the end of the world if he doesn't go.

So that is a resumŽ of how we expect the day to go. The only disappointing thing is that none of his playing partners from last year qualified for this competition. They were three of the nicest guys you could wish to meet and each has sent his good wishes to John for Thursday........

......but then aren't all FC members nice?

If you're hitting the M4 at 1700hrs, be prepared for this to be anything from 1hr 30 mins to 4hrs (seriously). The M4 is a complete &^%$ at that time of night, and 1 accident on that stretch will cause horrendous delays (I work just off J5 and commute between there & J16 every day).

Hi

I went to Bath last year on a hen night and there seemed to be loads of small boutique shops so it was nice to have a wander and look around somewhere different.

Would definitely recommend visiting the Spa its well worth a visit and very interesting, you can spend ages in there if you listen to all the talk plus they have a very nice restaurant within the building where you can have a meal or high tea

As HL said, I came 5th which i got a brolly for and the longest drive which got me a callaway driver. We also got a goodie bag with a vs hat, shirt, golf balls, brush tee, magazine etc. we also got a vs titled brolly in which i swiped 2 for myself.

The day its self was alrite. Nobody played very well. everyone was complaining about the greens and the wind. The greens were brutal. It was like a pot holed road. Also i didnt get any luck at all. Bad bounces etc.

I thought the food was bad too. It was all fancy rubish 4 breckfast which i didnt eat. The same went for the lunch after. I got a massage from the VS beauty terapists which was good and got last years trophie too. Will put up pics of that and some of the day.

Well done of the 5th place John, better luck next year - after all you don't want to win every year or nobody else will want to play! Still sorry lady luck wasn't with you this year and a pity the food was naff too.

Look forward to the pics of you recieving the trophy, who did the presentation in the end?

I know its not top dog like last time, but 5th is still a great achievement[oo], especially with the longest drive as well. An umberella seems a little stingy, but I am sure the new club will come in handy and glad you got to keep the trophy. Even though lady luck was not with you this time round, you are still v-flyers champ of golf[y].

Maybe they were using the same caterers as in UC.[:#]

The problem with the food was that it was not to John's taste [:p] and, if the truth be told, was a little unsubstantial. For breakfast he had 3 croissants (I didn't get to stay there this time for brekkie [:(]) but what seemed to be on offer were things like mini mushroom stuffed rolls and a lot of pastry based items, unlike last year at the Grove when there were chafing dishes with bacon and (I think) sausage. What was on offer after the competition was more in the line of canapŽs and finger food with things like a small potato stuffed with a sliver of meat and some dressing, a dish with a prawn and a dipping sauce, mini cheeseburgers, mini quiches cut in half, mini this and mini that, but nothing to make up into a meal, so to speak. Great party food, but not really for hungry men (and boys) who had spent the last four hours tramping round a golf course - some in lashing rain! [:0] Having said that there was the most gorgeous chocolate fountain with strawberries, pineapple, marshmallows and mini chocolate sponges ready to be skewered and coated with the said chocolate. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

To drink, Redheads were on offer with a non-alcoholic version and champagne was given out at the prizegiving.

The staff were very attentive but as I said the food was somewhat unsubstantial. Aer John was starving when we got to LHR. Unfortunately the Burger King outlet near the domestic departutes was gone (The Square Pie Co is opening up there shortly) so he went into CafŽ Rouge for steak and chips and then next door to CafŽ Italiano (or whatever it's called ) for bacon and toast!
