Moveable ottomans in UCS?

In another life I have a couple of buddies who are 744 pilots for Air NZ. We got chatting over a barbie last week in AKL, where we discussed the new Air NZ seats and their similarity to the Virgin UCS seat.

They seemed to be getting feedback from their PAX that the Virgin UCS seat is slightly better because of the moveable ottoman - and I said I didn't think it was moveable based on my experience of the dozen or so VS UCS flights I've taken. Or am I wrong?

They were also getting some feedback about couples not being able to sit adjacent to each other in the conventional manner - but personally I think this is a plus

No - its very fixed. It has to be really as it forms part of the bed when the seat folds down

In the original design it was movable. Early publicity / guides to using the suite mention this. Also on the suites themselves where you have the warnings about stowing table etc that come on when you try to convert to a bed there is one line that states "Stow ottoman".

Since the very earliest of prototypes I saw of the UCS the ottoman could never be stowed, however until the last iteration shown to us 'testers' it was able to move forwards and backwards a few inches (I seem to recall it having a little chrome handle on the front to enable you to pull / push it).

The promo brochure for the lauch of UCS shows the chrome handle but it was never fitted.

That is how I remember it, strangely though the seats they had on demo at the UCS launch party had the moveable ottomans [?]

Howard, this was also discussed in this thread albeit slightly OT.

Your comments about ANZ feedback re couples travelling together mirrors VS own experience which resulted in the dividers between seats D and G in rows 15 through 18 on the LHR config 744's being made removable. Maybe ANZ will go down the same route as there does not appear to be a better solution at the present time.

When UCS first launced there was indeed a chrome handle which you could slide the ottoman slightly forward or slightly backwards.

This feature was removed as people were resting there feet on the handle causing it to break/bend and hence then engineering were having to fix it!

To save costs and time it was decided to remove this feature.

Will let you know - my hard disk crashed on the trip AKL-SYD with the entire outward journey's TRs on it, so I have to redo it. Spent most of this week's vacation rebuilding the lappy My last backup is a couple of weeks old but is sitting on a disk in London.

Suffice to say my personal target of polishing off a 6 bottle case of Dom Perignon on the entire return trip is well within reach now with only two bottles left to work on between SYD and LGW.
