its obvious that a four engined plane will have greater failure redundancy than a twin - however given moden technology and reliability this isnt a big issue anymore

I've flown lots on 777's and they are a great plane. AA kindly let me play with one at a 777 launch at LHR about 9 yrs ago

It would only just fit in the BMI Hanger where it was parked!! tremendus wingspan etc

Well, I have to disagree with you, the jab at BA might have been a side reason for putting the slogan on planes, but as you can clearly see it only appears on VS's Airbuses (and only the dash 600 I believe) and it is really an attack on Boeing by Airbus.

Nick what about the slogan that appeared on a V-S 747 400 I remember seeing it on G Vast back in 2004 I think saying THE POWER OF 4.

4 ENGINES 4 LONG HAUL ALSO APPEARS ON THE A340/300 g Veld I believe.

I firmly believe that the two mottos above are coined by V-A and not airbus or Boeing as both airlines have twin and quad engine aircraft in their portfolio so I cant see it making good publicity for their full product portfolio.

However as a airline exclusively using a quad engine fleet then it makes 100% sense and if V-A go back on their slogans then where does that leave their integrity??????????

Cheers nick

Wayne- it is certainly an airbus slogan (google it!)- it appeared on all adverts for the a340-600 around lhr and also all over their website...thats why you never see it on the side of a 744 and why it is always an additional title (so on the engines).

At the time it was very good PR for Airbus- they were publically claiming that the new a340-500/600 was better than the 772er/300 as it had 4 engines- they were playing on people being worried about flying long haul on only 2 engines. Boeing got very annoyes as it implied that their a/c were unsafe! VS at the time were deciding between the 346 or the 777 and decided to go with the 346 partly because it had 4 engines. Airbus clearly were delighted with this as it was a major deal for them. The slogan was dropped by airbus once oil prices started to rise!

Cheers for that one

But you sort of agree with my statement Airbus may have conceived it but they dropped it Virgin continue to coin it and they also say on the 747- 400 as previously mentioned (THE POWER OF 4) both statements are much and much the same as in their most basic interpretations.

V-s also has the slogan on the back of G-VMEG G-VGAS G-VATL which are all A340/600Õs and on the engine of G-VELD which is an A340/300 where also upon the rear l fuselage it has the slogan WE'RE BETTER BY FOUR so if that is not a declaration by V-A then I donÕt know what is.

Love these sort of chats

I would imagine VS continue to use it as they have signed some kind of marketing agreement with airbus.

I think the power of 4 aircraft are very few and far between are they not (vast being the only one?)?

or it could just be that VS doesn't want to go to the expense of repainting that section of the aircraft when there is no real need to.

I remember that when VS was deciding to go for the 777 or the A346, they conducted a survey which found that 10-20% (I can't remeber the exact figure) of people would go out of their way to fly long-haul on a 4 engined aircraft.

Yeah i've read that as well, guess im one of the majority that just doesn't care.Knowing that the 777 is ETOPS 180 and knowing of one that has flown 5+ hrs on one engine I feel safe enough in it.

Just watching "airport" and saw G-VFAB with the power of 4 title s at the back. However, it looks like this is quite an old one (T5 is only a skeleton) so I don't know if it's still like this[:?]

It's not like the slogans actually bind VS to having 4 engine aircraft, which seems to be a common assumption of many people. They are sayings that fit VS's current situation and the slogans can change any time. Sooner or later VS will realize that 2 engine aircraft are much more effecient than the ones they have currently and will start getting some.

Evening nick

I suppose you have a good point there and thatÕs why many things go down the pan when people just use a slogan for sake of fashion.
The company I currently manage will be 147years old very soon and although we adapt and change with the time our slogan (motto) has always been the same and I guess you can say it has served us well as we went with a meaningful slogan not a fashion statement.

And I am not joking about the company I work for.

Oh im sure,to be honest im amazed that with VS ordering a lot of Airbus aircraft we havn't seen any A330's come in yet, they would be perfect for the east coast routes.
