Sorry im not very good at posting links!

Hi Gavin,

I've edited the link (if you click on the "edit" button above your post, you'll be able to see how it's done). It's actually a topic in it's own right - in this thread, so might be better to carry on the baggage conversation there.

Fuel at the pump has seemed to have risen recently so why the hike in fuel surcharge! Could they be taking the p!55?

[:?]Are the figures right?.

I remember VS reducing the Surcharge to £50 (return) back in November.[y]
The link says current surcharge is £60 increasing to £70 and last time the surcharge was increased was back in September.

Something doesn't add up.[:?]

When I made my last VH booking in Dec - they added a £50 fuel surcharge (which I didn't mind as I got £50 off the booking cost for booking early anyway). However, on checking last week, their web site was adding a fuel surcharge of £60 on all bookings. So this might even go up to £70 now [:0]

I remember reading that VS's business plan was based upon oil at $50 a barrel, so some kind of surcharge is inevitable.

However, today Brent Crude is trading at just under $62 a barrel. At the time of the last increase in fuel surcharge (september 2005) brent crude was in the $67-$62 range (i dont know the exact date).

So the oil price is no higher now than at the time of the last increase - it does therefore seem strange that another raise has been deemed necessary.

Will be interesting to see if BA follow suit in the next few days (VS and BA normally copy each other within a day or two...)

uuummm..no wanting to sound mean and not pointing the finger directly at VS,but since when does the cost of anything have anything to do with the price we pay?

If VS or any airline feels it can get away with a surcharge they will try,as you said the cost of the raw oil has not changed,so that leaves cost of refining and delivery. If neither of these has changed then it looks like a 10 pound profit to VS.

Of course I have no way of knowing if either of those factors have changed,if anyone knows please feel free to post.

Fuel surcharge does annoy me greatly.
1) Fuel is a cost of sale and should be included in the base price. If this means that VS and other need to increase their base price so be it.
2) With the reduction in luggage allowance this will need less fuel, which in itself means less weight which actually allows again for less fuel! (and so on)

Come on VS and others, you are obvioulsy taking lessons from the World Governments and using 'Stealth Taxes' to gain income.

NOT ON!

I think what happens is that the airlines buy futures in gas, so that the price at the pump bears no relation to when they bought the futures in the gas.
i.e. if they bought at $20 a gallon, then the price drops to $15 a gallon, you still have to pay the higher price
