Whilst chatting to Virgin Atlantic, ran this question about getting upgrades with Cash on the Day - they said it is DEFINATELY worth a shot as there are some bargains as they would rather the seat sold than unsold... I've got 2 tickets in Economy flying out - what are the limits I should pay for on the day upgrades from LHR to HKG for Upper Class?
How much can for afford to pay? IIRC the normal charge if they are doing the deal is 199 quid Y to PE but this is mainly on the UK to USA routes. Never hurts to ask....
The Virgin definition of a 'bargain' for a paid upgrade on the day is also open to debate. IMHO

If it really matters to you I wouldn't leave it to the last minute on the Hong Kong route. My experience of that route is that PE and Upper are almost always completely full. The chances of them selling you an upgrade at anything less than full price are rather remote, I would have thought.

It depends what class of economny ticket you have, and this could vary the price by about £400/£500.
I wouldn't rely on day of departure upgrades - especially on the Honkers - as a way of getting a cheap ticket to another class. At the moment the Y loads aren't that full but Upper and Premium are crammed, with possible downgrades most evenings!!

I think I might very well just endure Economy then - I remember vividly on my last flight in Premium Economy and looking backwards, and Economy wasn't that full at all - as In some folk took the entire row for themselves back there cause of it!
So, flying Economy on this instance might be a blessing in disguise!

I'll be doing much the same thing when it comes time for me to fly!
