I'm traveling to SFO in a few weeks with my best mate, who happens to have his birthday on the day of the flight. I'd like to surprise (i.e. embarrass) him on board, and was thinking about taking a cake and a bottle of champers along, sneaking them to the crew, and asking them to deliver at some point.... do you know if they'd be ok with that? I can imagine the cake would be fine, the champagne less so... I'm sure I remember something about not being allowed to open your own drink on board.

does anyone have any experience with this? Perhaps one of the crew who read V-F regularly could advise me on the best plan of action.

Cheers muchly!

Hi ya Scally,

Im sure you could take a cake on board - Champagne probably not - however isnt it going to be a bit awkward carrying it etc?

You can do all of this without resorting to "sneaking things to the crew". You can actually order a Virgin Cake and Champagne on board - and also a load of other gifts from the retail therapy section of the Virgin Atlantic web site - have a look here simply call them up and book what you need - give them flight details ( and seat if you know it) and they do it all for you.

Ive done this a few times -even when I havent been on board - and it works great!!

Have a great time on your trip[y]

Of course for maximum embarrasment, it is not unknown for crew to announce the birthday so that everyone can join in the fun. Let the crew know, and if they can help I am sure they will. If your mate is approaching a milestone birthday, ensure that the crew know this (maybe adding 10 years or so onto the age[}:)])

Taking alcahol onto the flight is fine, after all we all have been to the duty free before. Actually drinking it is another thing altogether, and would not be a good move. I would order the cake, as having it in your carry on is difficult. And of course Security my blow the gaff, by turning it out of your bag to see what it is.

Ah, but I was going to make a special cake designed to further the embarrassment opportunities (I found a place that prints photos onto sheets of icing!) plus he is allergic to a few things and is fussy about others. Bloody queen that he is ;)
I will def order the champagne though.
As for security springing me in front of him - I was going to feign an excuse and then go through security separately. And if that didnt work, I was going to write a note and stick it on top of the cake, begging security to be subtle when they come across it. if they come across it.
And it would only be a small cake anyhow. can't go getting too fat on the flight over now, eh. :)
