Maybe we need to start a new-thread called "Where to use your new card."?

Hi Julie,

I will be honest and say that its just too hot to look -but somewhere back in the depths of this thread someone put on a web site that lists all the stores etc that accept AMEX - to be honest, like you have said - most major retailers accept it - but like you I have had "do we take AMEX" bellowed across a hotel bar!!

Still waiting for my card, although have received PIN. Also noticed when viewing my on-line statement that it says American Express on screen. There are # symbols aongside the last few transactions, perhaps this means these transactions go against the new card, ie. the associated benefits are the AMEX ones rather than the MC ones?

I think it's more likely to be the other way round, transactions against your MC that won't earn as many miles.

I have just logged on to my VS mastercard account and it has all changed over to VS Amex, Logo and all. Does this mean that they have trasnferred over the balance as well, as it appears so. I will only be in the UK next week to check the post to see what is going on[:?]

I've had my card since Monday - and you know something? I can't bring myself to use it. I can't analyse this, but it's as if the card and I are circling one another, each daring the other the make the first move....

Still waiting here too [:#] and actually feeling annoyed that it hasn't arrived yet - I've got a big bill to pay and don't want to miss out on the extra 1400 miles that the new card would give me over the old one

That sounds rather sad in itself doesn't it?! :D

Well I've got my card yesterday:), activated this morning[y]
Thought I'd use it this afternoon.... and guess what I've tried to spend money on it 3 times and all 3 different retailers do NOT take American Express[n].
Ok one or two places not taking it, but 3 in a row, what is wrong? Do I live in the wrong part of the country? or am I just trying to spend money at the wrong places?.

My local Championship football club do not take AE[n], the local restaurant that I visit every week does not take AE[n][n] and believe it or not but Zurich Insurance, one of the biggest insurers in the world, does not take AE[n][n][n].
Luckily I still have my original VS Mastercard and this was accepted at all 3 places so hopefully I'm still earning some miles.
I'll try to use the new AE card tomorrow around town, but if I get the same response then I'll be getting a different card.

Anybody else having these problems?

luckily for us - most of spend is in the major retailers that accept amex... but if you use independants a lot - thats a different kettle of fish.[:#]

I can beat that.

My local ASDA accepts Amex, but the attached ASDA petrol station does not.

That's odd because my local ASDA petrol station does accept Amex (I did use one of the self-service pumps though)

Ah all the old Amex refusals are coming back to me know. I was a regualr Amex user pre Virgin m/c, now going back to using Amex, I am remembering all the 'fun' refusals.

While we are out doing each other, my local Tesco Express does nto accpet Amex at the pump, but it does instore.

Ok, away from the anaomalies. Nandos do not accpet Amex, which suprised me as they are a national chain. BTW does Woolworths accept Amex ? They didn't a fw years ago.

I booked car hire last night - the site (airline network) accepts Amex, I made the booking, and very very careful to put the number in correctly. And checked it. And it didn't work! Had to call the company to do it manually. Is this the sign of things to come?

Also - I notice that with a Visa Gold card - slightly off topic - the cover you've always had if you pay with cc, if the item is over £100, is being stopped from 1st September. Does anyone know if this is the same with Amex or if there's been a change in the the law or something? It just rings a bell that MBNA asked if I wanted payment protection - as it covered if I lost my job, but also if my card is lost or stolen... does anyone know anything about this?

That insurance is totally different. The payment protection is cover you must pay for (you have to pay something silly like 10p for every £100 on your balance... cant remember the excat amount..) but there is a big catch with it - even though they state you wont get charged if you pay your balance off in full every month you will! When they CC company send out your statement the charge will be added so you'd have to pay off the balance before the statement is sent, complete rip off. Even then the insurance will just about cover you min payment if you do get in trouble.

The problem with the VS amex could be that as it is a new card with probably a new first 5 or 6 digit prefix (it tells the machine what bank it's for) not all CC machines could be updated to read it correctly. I've seen it happen before.

Which was my understanding - or had been. It just threw me for a loop when the guy mentioned about the card being lost or stolen, suggesting it was part of the same thing. Which it seems it isn't. Thank goodness....

Same thing happened to me when I activated card. The guy tried to sell me 2 types of insurance, the first was to cover payments if I loose my job etc, I refused this as I always pay off my balance in full each month.
The second was a bit more confusing, maybe it was meant to be like that[V].
It came across as if it was to cover against fraudulant use of my card. When I mentioned that I was sure that under current law I was only liable for the first £50 of misuse he backtracked and said it was to cover my cards in case they were lost or stolen. I think he was trying to sell me a policy similar to Sentinel Card Protection where one call will cancel all cards.
I do get annoyed when companies try to sell me something I don't want or already have especially when I have rung about another matter.

Solution - by Gift Vouchers with the Amex at Waitrose, and redeem them in John Lewis, or even online at johnlewis.com!
