I have noticed on various websites about the amount of 747's that are V:Port systems seem to crash more times than on a A340-600. I Expect that all aircraft are fitted at the same place when been fitted with V:Port, is there any difference with the way it is set up on a 747 and an a340, as people say that the A340-600 offers more leg room, than a 747. Or is it all in the imagination??
Or is it that they both have the same amount of system crashes but the majority non of the A340's have been brought up.

I very much doubt the type/make of aircraft is a factor as to the number of crashes, I, and I know others who have had problem & problem-less (is that a word[?]) flights on both type of a/c and talking to the crew about the problems, never has the aircraft type come up as a reason.

I am sure there are more techinal minded people on this site who would know about the set up and maybe they will be able to shed some light.

I don't it is the aircraft type because when I flew the 346 a few weeks ago from Hong Kong to Sydney, V:port was working fine.

Could it relate back to the amount of passengers on the flight then??
Because the 747 holds more passengers could it be that it crashes because they are all trying to assess it all at once???

I stepped into this topic today, and saw with horror some of the comments. eg "Because the 747 holds more passengers it crashes". Luckily I realise now that I was reading them out of context. The 'it' refers to the IFE system not the plane.[phew]

[oo] - very good Jeremy [^][^]lol - on a slighty more sensible note, i again doubt that the IFE reliabilty is due to number of pax, as quite often it is only selected seats that do not work and not the whole plane (as mentioned in a recent topic in this very forum!)

...usually the bulkhead row seats and exit rows, as the screens get damaged too easliy due to the way the screen is stored with the actual LCD screen facing outwards at shoe and foot level under the seat. A bad design IMHO.

The system itself still works - it's just the screen that doesn't. I've been on a number of V:Port A/C where bulkhead rows have been blocked due to faulty screens.

Must admit the flight I was on when V-port was acting up (working but not 100%) I was in row 18 in PE (Bulkhead). So very good point [y][y]

It could also be down to the fact that MAS 3000E or i (the real name) was fitted at build on the A346 & is a retrofit on most of the B744's. Other VS aircraft had a mix of MAS 2000 & Hughes-Avicom Apax-150i, obviously the former would have more in common with the 3000 system. The LGW based B744 (originally ordered by Alitalia) have an IFE system called MDDS by Thales, a little known fact is that this system could have been AVOD if VS had got in early enough when taking up the orders!!!

MAS is now trading under it's better known name of Panasonic.

The retrofit is a big job, for example the Apax 150 system originally fitted has no major components in common with the MAS system, this is from the seat controls, screen & SEB through to wiring & system distribution boxes.

And if you thought the IFE doesn't consist of much try this just for starters (on an A343 with Apax 150i);
14 X SVHS video players,
28 X Floor disconnect boxes,
178 X Seat electronics boxes (SEB),
28 x Underseat boxes,
330 x Display units,
330 x controller/cord reels,
plus PAT (primary access terminal) & power supply, various controllers, file servers & modulators AND the associated wiring, cooling & racking to store it all.

Thats intersting info, cheers Denzil[y], if VS had taken this option up would of made flying out of LGW/MAN so much more appealing now.
