Oh at the grand old age of 34, I well remember SoTC, channel shut-downs overnight (national anthem on the Beeb before the dot anyone?) and that bloody clown on the test card freaked me out too! (Yes Jeremy, I much preferred your Duck test card :D)

Actually it's quite amazing how much TV has changed, even in those short years...made me feel old now [ii]

Cheers

Michael

I think they are real words because I seem to have heard them before. But it seems that they got missed from the my dictionary when it was written. Oh well, another book to throw on the fire!

It's not until you go to live/work/holiday in a country that neither uses the Latin alphabet nor speaks a language routed in Latin, that you realise just how useful Latin really is.

I'm no linguist but visiting Italy after a 6 month stay in china gave me a new appreciation of the use of a little bit of Latin!

Oh my god, how much has this topic covered! It started as a normal "Problem with VF thread", which became a major one and has since covered old test cards/blow up dolls/Jenna Jameson and now lessons in latin, i know threads usually go slightly off topic, but this is just bizarre, funny, but bizarre:D

It is something that used to happen fairly regularly, perhaps before you joined us: A thread would become a little bit free flow, in a lighthearted veign. It sometimes became a problem in that an otherwise important topic vered into the left bank, through some trees, and ended up in a ditch. But more often than not, IMO, it bought a little frivolous relief to the serious proceedings elsewhere. I think there were some unwritten rules, mainly that the OP's point had to be pretty much fully dealt with, or the OT bit got stompped on; just a common decency to the OP really. And the normal rules of taste, decorum, and reasonable use of language normally applied (although they were sometimes stretched in the case of Jetwet ;)).

I, for one, am quite pleased to see the old world back.

Thanks for info Jeremy - must admit, like you I find it often helps to lighten the mood once the OP has been dealt with, and as there often many amusing comments made it certainly does make me chuckle!!

So Im with you on this one.

Personally I find antidisestablishmentarianism to be a floccinaucinihilipilification of effort. So why don't all you disbelievers go and live in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Apologies for the spelling - or mis-spelling. It's a long time since I did Latin and it was only for a year....[:(]

Say anything with enough conviction and a deadpan face, and people will believe you.... unless, of course, you're a politician.

Nothing quite like a good old segue! Some conversations where I work end up getting just too surreal.... I love it!

In the days before internet and forums such as these, me and my buddies used to sit around eating, drinking, and putting the world (and other things) to rights. Quite often some wag would sneak on the tape recorder.... Now, those conversations were surreal when listened to again years later!
