I am flying with my partner and child. My daughter's flight was booked after mine and therefore she has got her own reference number. Will I have a problem checking her in on-line because she is only 9. Also my sister in law's son is also under a seperate booking reference, but he is 10 (so fare wise is classed as an adult) will she too have a problem checking him in on line. Please help
Erm not sure - the booking is seperate which is probably going to cause the problem, the VS website says that young passengers travelling on there own cannot use OLCI and I imagine the system will think that your daughter is travelling seperatly as the bookings aren't linked, its a tricky one, maybe a quick call to VS or the flying club team if you are a VF frequent flyer.
The full faq's and t&c for OLCI are here

A couple of queries Gill.
1. Normally you cannot book an child fare by itself without either arranging for an unaccompanied minor or linking to an existing booking. If VS believe that your daughter is travelling alone I would give them a call. Normally you need to book 15years or under through reservations.
2. You say that your sister in laws son is 10 and is classed fare wise as an adult. VS charge child fares for children 11 and under so not sure if you were incorrectly charged full fare simply because they assumed he was travelling unaccompanied - unaccompanied minors are charged full fare.
I guess the overall advice offered with regard to check-in sounds good.

Why not:
a) call Virgin and at least get sat together
b) then try to check in online and look for better seats once they release those before the flight, according to some this is possible just check you can before moving yourselves around and potentially splitting yourselves up

There's a plane at JFK, to fly you back from far away
all those dark and frantic transatlantic miles

Thanks for all your advice. I have telephone VA and they have said we were put on different reference numbers because I booked with miles, they have now cross referenced all of us so that the system knows we are travelling together, but I will still not be able to check in on line. It does seem very silly of VA to put a child on a different ref number, knowing that they can't travel alone.
