Reading about all the items you are allowed to take on board now, does this mean that my son will be able to take his PSP? Apparently you are now allowed food is this true, and if so is it only food that you buy airside?

Yes, you can take PSPs now, but make sure your cabin baggage meets the new size requirements.

As for shops:

Before security: All shops and catering outlets are open to all passengers, but any liquids and gels purchased must be packed into your luggage for check-in. Any other purchases must fit into your hand luggage.

Once through security: All shops and catering outlets are open to all passengers. If you are travelling to any destination except the USA then you can take all items purchased in the departures lounge into the aircraft cabin. If going to the USA then food is allowed, but no drinks.

Thank you v. much. Just one more quick thing, my son does not eat airline food and before this happed I was going to do him a packed lunch to take with us (very fussy eater) will I be allowed to take this through to departures with me or will they stop me at security.

I read it as food is allowed to all destinations, just no liquids, so you should be ok with a packed lunch. That said, the threatcon level could change at any moment, so rules can change. Best to confirm this just before you fly.
