It's just gone down to 5,000 on News 24. I guess that 10,000 was a bit of jounalistic extravagance.

That is a lot of bags.. BBC say that 5,000 of them have found their way back to their rightful owners, but the same number are still lost in the ethers....

Oh well - wouldn't be August without the traditional Annual BA Public Relations Meltdown, would it?

Obviously BA are going to come out of it with apparent egg on their faces due to the sheer scale of their operation at LHR. Anyone have any idea if VS/other carriers have lost a similar kind of percentage of total bags handled?

Also reports are suggesting that thefts from baggage are up too. What a mess...

On the subject of compensation Sky News are reporting this evening that the Dark Side are looking for 50 Million from BAA for all the disruption since last Thursday

A 15 Million figure was quoted for VS in the same report.

Small change being asked for considering BAA's shambolic handling of LHR.

That is my biggest gripe, BAA make all that money, yer its us who will no doubt end up folking out for improving security. This whole situation has been handled appallingly by BAA. [:(!]

ISTBC but my understanding is that airlines are citing they pay huge landing fees for "services" at the airport and as BAA have failed in this regard, quite rightly the airlines want their money back.

but hang on, don't pax pay "airport taxes"[:?][:?]

Just a thought

Well, that's about 200 tonnes of cargo. Put another way(AKE ULD apx 4.2 cubic metres), it is about 1000 ULD's (luggage bins), or 13 aircraft's worth of luggage. I guess BA are having to use cargo planes to move it around [n]

Somewhere there is a pile of suitcases, which if stacked up one on top of the other (side to side, not end on end) would reach to 3000m - around 10.8 eiffel towers excluding aerials.

Using statistical averages, the pile will contain the equivelent of 4 suitcases of toothpaste and 1 complete suitcase of condoms.

Put another way, it is one hell of a lot of luggage.

Assume this would equate to a suitcase of condoms NOT bought after security??? [}:)]

Story from the Daily Whale. In particular I note it is reported that Sussex Police have seen a massive increase in bag theft. It is probably worth reminding everyone to use locks, keep luggage close at hand in the queues and not to put their address on the case, particularly the outside (perhaps just your name and mobile number). No doubt the theves are circling knowing that people are struggling to put their valuables in their hand luggage.

I just love the comments at the end:

At the moment, any baggage handler that is suspected of theft should be treated as a looter and shot on sight!

Now you don't think that may be a little excessive do you Tim?

Please excuse me now, I am still shell shocked after Claire's hint of what she gets upto before security.[:I][:0]:)
