Is this a good price??

VH have quoted me £1339(£1212.10 with 10% FC discount) for a PE return to SFO next Sept. Looking at VS fares for various months this & nxt year I cant find anything cheaper, but BA WT+ seems to be around the £850-950 mark (dont want to use VS but just as a price comparrison), obviously these fares aren't for Sept as not available yet, but just using them as a guide.

So I just wondered if the fares VH are quoting me seem ok or should I wait for VS to release their fares and maybe get it cheaper (or maybe even a good MPM fare?)

Any advice would be much appreciated

I assume you mean Sept 2007? if so that's probably in the right ball park Neil, you may be lucky with a fare sale if you want to wait a bit. I would hope you may get it for closer to £900.

Seems a little on the high side to me - this far out there should be K availability which would bring the price down to £800-900 (in any event, less than £1k though it wouldn't be miles-upgradeable). That said, because it's so far out, VS probably haven't released/calculated the K fares yet...

BTW, is that price for 1 person only?

Yes Bazz, sorry I did mean to say Sept 2007[:I], I was hoping for more about the £1k mark, so with a potential saving of £400+ on 2 fares I guess its worth waiting until October when VS can price it up for me.

Seems like a good reason to get a VS Amex and use the upgrades - if you can hold on till you spend 10k.

An upgradeable Y fare has got to be loads cheaper and you'll get miles on the Y.

Interesting idea Phil, imagine I will be fairly close to 10k over the next6/7months but doing it this way it does not mean I will get the upgrade on the date i require, and the dates are fairly important. Think Im going to hold on till Oct and see what VS can offer, bit of luck might get a decent MP fare for around £800-£1k.

Flying 9th September '07, but VH says the price is fixed for all of Sept, so preiffer you would say that best to wait and get a VS ticket direct as soon as the fares become available?

Yup. For sure. I'd not spend £1,339 of my own money on a PE ticket, that's for sure.

As a benchmark, even next JULY (getting into peak season), a PE ticket in S is only £1,241. So a K would be cheaper still [:0]

Cheers for the advice Paul, am I right in hoping to only spend about max 1k on a K? and will K be available as soon as prices released?

In general though, anything less than £1k [y]

lol - don't worry I won't come hunt you down if VS aren't cheaper, prepared to wait now and see what happens, VH aren't going to sell out this far in advance and even if I only save £100 per ticket its still worth it, advice is taken just as that, advice!

Hi Neil,

I find http://www.expedia.co.uk useful for getting fare quotes as, unlike va.com, Expedia offers up the all important fare class;)

I just plugged in dates for LHR-SFO return in July 07 (out 3/7/07, back 17/7/07) and a K fare is offered up at £1246, incl. taxes. Ties in pretty much with what Paul mentions re the S fare - I'm assuming Paul was quoting an S fare excl. tax?

Thanks James - now have been looking at Expedia today and how do I tell what fare code it is? Its probably just me been stupid again[ii], but I cannot see where it shows me the class, all it gives is a price[?]

Once expedia comes up with the list of flights available just click on Choose This Flight against your chosen flight. Then scroll down to 3. Review the Rules & Restrictions and click on the link. It then displays a load of stuff, for the LHR-SFO flight I selected in July 07 it looks like this >>

I really have no idea why VA don't offer up the fare class code on their site, it's so frustrating having to phone and check. I normally check availability of a particular fare class on Expedia then call VA to book in the knowledge that my chosen fare class is indeed on offer to the public through Expedia. I tend to always book with VA as it's £10 cheaper than Expedia, plus at the moment there's the AMEX offer of 6 miles per £
