Doesn't *always* work, Juliet.
The last time I used one, OLCI still forced it as a non-upgraded ticket, despite having the flag most definitely on my record. Only at the airport did they apply the upgrade.
I forgot to mention in the initial post that the letter informing us of our SA upgrade was accompanied by a telephone call from VS customer services (nice guys), explaining the upgrade. I should get the tickets through the post today or tommorow, is there something in particular that I should be looking for on them, seat code maybe? I think im expecting Y class as the flights were booked for me via Virgin holidays, In would have thought I have paid full price economy as the booking was made in feb

The fare code for VH tickets is usually V (not Y)in economy if memory serves me right(occasionally N if it's a mega deal).Hope you manage the upgrade regardless.

It seems that a lot of VH bookings are now made in N Class and they seem to only use V if no N class available[n]

My experience of VH has been that "N" is often used, and I don't think it has to be a "mega deal" offer. When booking our trip earlier this year our initial invoice showed a number of (unrequested and unexplained but welcome) "flight discounts". When I decided to purchase an upgrade to PE the VH agent explained that these discounts were applied because the booking had been made in "N" (and hence my total cost of upgrade was the loss of discount plus the advertised upgrade price).
I guess we could've stumbled across a "mega deal" offer without intending to or realising that we had.
In danxisqn's particular case I assume that if VS have taken the trouble to ring and explain the potential for a "space available" upgrade then the initial offering with be "Y" or the booking will be flagged in some way on the system so that a flag is raised at check in.

We can get better, because we're not dead yet
The fare code for an SA upgrade is irrelevant in most cases. Flyingco. upgrades have to be issued in certain fare codes, but if the airline have offered it against your PNR regardless, then the fare code will not matter.
For clarity, there will be no indication on the ticket *itself* to suggest it's any different. It will still be in the original booking class - the VS computer system does the rest behind the scenes.

Thats good then, I was looking at the guide to booking codes in the guide provided on this site and my head started to spin. As you may have guessed reding my previous posts, this is my first flight with VS. I have only gone down the upgrade route this time having flown long haul to Austalia and South America, I reckon the extra comfort is appreciated. Albeit MCO and MBJ are not exactly a million miles away compared to some routes, I did fly CDG-JKK-CDG over a long weekend with AF, it wasnt the most comfortable of trips
