Checked Baggage size

Me & the other half are going to the USA in October flying PE. As I understand it we are allowed 2 pieces each of checked baggage neither of which should weigh over 32Kgs and not measuring more that 158Cms in dimensions.

My question is, one of my suitcase dimensions is in fact when totalled up measures 170cms, (which by reckoning in old money is approx 4"), can you tell me how rigorisly this policy is policed please. Do they have tape measures at check in. [?]

I would rather not have to buy new cases if possible, we shall be travelling to London by train as well and I think her indoors would struggle with two smaller pieces, as opposed to just one case.

I have checked the forums and dispite numerous baggage questions, I can see no deinitive answer to this question.

Never seen checked luggage be measured myself ... and i think we have all seen some of the megalithic monstrosities that some people call a suitcase.

Personally, i would not worry. I have never measured my own cases so cant say how they conform to the 158cm rule, they just look 'standard'. Four inches isnt a lot to the eye ... unless its a woman checking the bags of course

I wouldn't personally worry about it either. As long as it doesn't look much different to any other suitcase and it weighs less than 32Kg, you should be fine

If you get an check-in agent with some seniority they may eyeball it, although 4" over isn't a lot to eyeball. I can pretty much tell when checking someone in if an item is oversized or overweight by eye or feel, but 4" isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things. Personally I'd say if you don't mention it and are polite and everything when you check-in they probably won't bother you.

Sometimes when I have a really rude passenger I will split hairs over being a pound overweight. I'm not saying anyone at VS does that, but just don't give them a reason to look for something, haha.

I think you'll be fine.

[:?] Bit of a Spinal Tap moment here..do you not mean 4' (feet)? 4" (inches) for a suitcase is pretty stingy, even with inflation...

If your suitcase is too big to go on the baggage belt it'll go on the oversized trolley but you'll have to sign a limited liability tag.
