From the VS web site here

Passengers carrying one musical instrument in its case, which is too large to fit within the cabin baggage allowance, can carry it through the airport security checkpoint, in addition to the above allowance. However, please note that storage space is very restricted onboard and the carriage of additional items may be declined at check in without notice. Please contact us in advance, if you have any questions or if you plan to carry a large musical instrument.

so no, you wont be able to carry it onboard with you but you should be OK carrying it through the airport and will probably have to have it tagged and then put in the A/C hold as you board the A/C. As it states, I'd give VS a call though.

All sorts of "Airplane" images come to mind - particularly Buddhist Monks with stupid grins. :)

Ive done Guitar tech/roadie for a band which went to Japan - so as a tip - when you put the guitar in the hold it goes without saying to make sure it is well protected - and that means making sure it sits very snugly in its case ( use dusters or similar to pack it out) and then loosen the strings so thatthere is no tension in them whatsover as changes in temperature in the hold can end up warping the neck!!

Have fun

Don't the aircrew often take theirs with them. I thought that in conditions of poor visibility they can navigate using their own instruments.

(Sorry about this one, it has been a boring afternoon)
