In these days of heightened security the travelling public in LGW is advised to use Twilight Check-In. Now I must preface this by saying I have only once flown out of LGW on a VS flight and I didn't use it as my incoming flight arrived well after Twilight Check-In closed. However my understanding was you checked in your cases and basically kept what you would need for the night and on the flight and by and large that would be carried on to the flight. Am I right?

If you look at the prohibited items posted on the Vs website:

Soaps
Creams
Lipsticks or lip balms
Mascara
Toothpaste
Talcum powder
Hairspray and other aerosol items
Deodorants/Sun tanning products
Bottles of contact lens solution

well, they are exactly the items I would need overnight - with the exception of contact lens solution and talcum powder.

OK, you could argue that I can use the toiletries in the hotel I will be overnighting in but it may be that nasty stuff they have in containers screwed to the walls and I have never been able to squeeze them sufficiently to get enough to work up a suitable lather. In some instances the toiletries may be sufficient for me to shower and wash my hair but I have sensitive skin and haven't used soap on my face since God knows when (no cracks about dirty faces, please. I use cream) and I need mousse or gel for my hair which is very fine and will just lie flat without such assistance. Courtesy and compassion for my fellow men tell me I need to use toothpaste and deodorant.

So, I might be able to use what is on offer in the hotels if it is a sufficiently high standard; I might be able to get sample sizes of the lotions, potions and unguents I use; I might be able to root around in a previous amenity kit pre the Scrooge pack and find a sample size toothbrush and toothpaste but it still leaves me without hair mousse/gel, deodorants, lipstick or lip balm and any other make-up I choose to use unless I check it in the following day......

.....which makes a mockery of Twilight Check-In as I still have to check that bag with my lotions, potions and unguents the following day!

Completely agree with you HL!

Absolutely no way i could conform to that, and plus, most hotels do not supply cosmetics, hairspray etc, only the standard soap and shampoo - both of which are usually unsuitable for me. Like heck am i buying a new load of toiletries for one night to throw them away at the airport.

I'm still going to check-in as per normal for LGW.

Thanks,
Sarah

As a bloke (and a fairly vain one at that) I guess its slightly different, although I wouldn't like it, I could cope without some of my essentials (moisturiser etc) for 1 night, and I guess that most less vain blokes could cope very easily, although I can see how much more incovienient it would be for women.

I mentioned something along these lines in another recent topic about twilight CI. We've used it a number of times on our jollies out to the Caribbean, and it worked like a treat. Pack everything you need for the night/following morning in a decent sized carry-on case, check your big ol' heavy luggage in and before you know it you're settled into the Hilton Exec Lounge with a free G & T in your hand.

But, it has to be said, there is no point in VS actively encouraging folk to use twilight to cut down on queues if, as honey lamb points out, you can't pack the basics anymore. And if you think you're going to fit much more than a pair of clean pants in your new, reduced hand luggage, you are sadly mistaken...
