Honestly though, while understand where you are coming from, I just don't see that it is VS's job to provide somebody with all the stuff they need for a couple of days away..nice as it would be, I would be more than happy with VS providing enough of the right stuff for a 10 hr flight.

If you have a given amount of money to spend, then I would far rather that it was spent on something that I will actually use than a pair of cuff links. The thing is that none of this is that expensive, but its a pain to put together yourself.

If you had half an hour in town to buy an 8 x 8 inch zip lock bag, do you know where you would go?

Being of the fairer sex I have no use for the cufflinks or of the items you have suggested in your post. Quite frankly, I feel somewhat insulted by the cufflinks since I am a widow and have no-one to whom to donate them. I would feel even more insulted about the items you have suggested whether single, married or widowed. It implies that women do not/should not fly Upper Class [V]

I agree with both of you, just give me what I need to get through the flight in a nice looking container and I am happy, no need for cuff links etc as to me it's just a waste.

The things I listed were toiletries for a man, because they are the ones I know about. I still think a set of toiletries would be of more use for everyone, even if the exact types are not all the same.

To avoid having to carry around two lots of everything, they could perhaps use the current system where you get a basic pack of the common stuff, and then a choice of other bits and pieces, that might not be wanted by everyone.

Whatever, the it should all come in a 8 x 8" transparent resealable bag.

ahenry, is it not possible to put toiletries in your checked-in luggage?
I don't think that VS need to go that far, just the essentials for a flight, maybe some polos like they used to do:D and some kind of pencil-case like container;)

I think ahenry was tryng to point out that sometimes people travel for a few days with NO checked luggage, even Longhaul, and still need the basics, so nees it to fit through the seurity restrictions.

However, as these security restrictions change so often and without warning, it would be a large expense for VS to try to accomodate the current allowances of liquid and then if/when it changes again, be able to amend the kits at short notice so nobody goes without an amenity kit (such as it is....) Maybe a 'nicer' variation of the current system would work... nicer, tansparent, reusible containiner for the 'basics' (although should always include toothbrush and pen for those immigration forms!!) and an easy to see basket of the extras, or a card (like the old Y menus of old) with what extras are available, with enough for every passenger!!!

But, we'll have to wait and see what the new kit is before we know how good it is.... or how effiective it is

Sorry am I being stupid here, or is it out of the question of having two kits - one for each sex? BA First manages this.

Thanks,
Richard

2 packs would be a good idea, but then they need to load more than the actual number of seats to ensure each person gets the right one.... unless someone wants to enforce the 'you'll get what you;re given because we've run out of what you want' that happens in Y during the meal service. That would potentially cost a bit more (having more kits loaded per flight) so not necessarily something the bean counters would like to put into operation.

Just my 2p worth.

So if we are there to reduce costs by saving weight for takeoff, why not remove the flowers from the bar, or the little red cushions from the UCS. Hold on... :D

Why not innovate? Instead of loading 300+ Retail therapy magazines, why not put them on V:Port as an interactive application. Hey they could even do an online stock check thing like in Argos, or a pre-order service.

Sounds like a winner to me - think of all those trees saved! Air staying cleaner from not processing pulp for paper! (Driving through Oregon on I-5 anytime soon? Hold your breath as you drive by the sawmills and paper mills [:$])

The only problem I foresee: your idea, alas, requires V:Port to work correctly. The new mantra: Reduce, recycle, reuse? Not on VS! Lately it's been reboot, reboot, reboot... [:(]

Ahh that's true, but then maybe it would act an incentive in favour of the passengers because if V:Port is down and they can't sell Duty Free maybe they will be a little more willing to fix the issue when the plane is on the ground! Obviously they could still have the manual backup of a catalogue for the crew to give out if needed. I don't even want to think how many copies of Retail Therapy VS goes through each season.

Thanks,
Richard

Good idea - although I fear it may bring a drop in duty free trade for VS as I, like many others I suspect, only browse through the duty free whilst sitting at the geat waiting to leave. Depending on the length of the flight, I probably wouldn't specifically look up the catalogue on the IFE.

Don't be so sure. This is what I had waiting for me at my seat yesterday.

Here's some UC amenity kit history for comparison...

VS on top of things again, when I get home I will have a dig around see which kit's from various airlines I still have packed away, my fav's from memory were the one's from BA F (very nice) and CO F/J from HNL/LAX flight, pretty basic but had EVERYTHING a man needs i.e razor, hair brush, tooth paste and brush, eye mask, pen, notepad and shoe cleaner.Pretty simple, all packed in something a little bigger than a cigarette box and I still have it...the Scrooge envelope (:D)never made it off the plane, hell on the flight back I tossed it into the overhead bin and never opened it.

My flabber has never been so gasted [:0] I can't believe that they have replaced the cardboard enevlope with a plastic bag. Is this for real or just a temporary thing?

I'm with you Mrs G! Please tell me this isn't the new amenity pack! How stupid can VS be! They have gone from cheap cardboard to a nasty plastic bag! [:(!] What did it contain?

I'm shocked if that is the permanent replacement that is supposed to address the serious shortcomings of the original snooze pack. So Virgin's top paying customers, in it's highest cabin offering, will get a disposable plastic bag with their things in?!

I think the cardboard envelope had more class!

Thanks,

David.

I had the plastic bag joy on the 26th - although this is NOT the replacement.

They're simply running down the stocks before the new one is released later this month.

Still cardboard wallet ex-BOS last night (2nd Jan), though I noticed the earplugs are sealed in a plastic bag, rather than in the more usual "pillow" container.

On my IAD 23rd Dec flight in UC, the pack was left on the small seat in a plastic bag, no wallet. I did keep the eyeshade, and plan to reuse it, as it is of better quality than the one I usually end up using in PE and Economy.

Eee luxury. Earplugs? You 'ad earplugs? When I were flyin' I 'ad to squeeze t' toothpaste and t' handcream into me ear. And that were if I were lucky. Mostly 'ad t' make do wi' a pair of t' lip balms.

We had the plastic bag on both legs of our LHR-DXB-LHR flights Dec 24 & 31, it was quite a shock after I had prepared for the cardboard envelope. All that we got were socks, eyeshades and earplugs. I had to go and ask for toothpaste and brush.

Personally, for an airlines premium and flagship cabin I don't think that is acceptable. Every flight counts and every detail should count, that just goes to devalue the product to both regular customers who are already considering alternatives and new customers who are trying out this great seat & service for the first time. Cheap and tacky ... the Economy kit really does look better then this.
