Space available to "J" is dependant on job grade/length of service. For the 7 free flights, staff must still pay the tax, so hardly free AND they are standby flights (i.e no seats available you aren't getting on!!).

I saw this at MIA when I was checking in, staff were asking for seats but the supervisor kept telling them there weren't any.

A few years ago just before New Years Eve when I was flying to SFO in J there where actually more staff than non-staff. Nearly every name of the meal list which was stuck on the galley wall had 'staff' next to it. J was full BTW.

Yes, staff do pay taxes but not as much as a commercial passenger would. We only pay the Government fees and partial fuel surcharge. A commercial passenger would pay around £135 in taxes/fees to the USA, staff pay only £55 as the airport operators dont charge us the airport fees and passenger service charge.

As for upgrades, all staff regardless of grade/lenth of service get unlimited upgrades to W for them and their family. J upgrades are given according to grade and service length.

Even if you use your 7 free flights, we get ZED fares for great fares. A return ZED fare to NYC is £50 plus the lower tax amount! Staff and their families/friends can get as many ZED fares a year as you like. Standby is fine, if you check the loads beforehand you can book onto flights which are not too busy. Obviously things can change but I have never had a problem. Plus, if you want a confirmed seat we get Mates Plus fares which can be about £100 to NYC.
