They already do and have done for several months now on all flights in economy.

PE and Upper are still 32Kg on trans-Atlantic flights though.

Sorry yes I was terribly unclear, I meant for all passengers.

Nearly came out in a cold sweat then (sorry, not very ladylike). With the five of us it's nearly always 2 bags each and packed to precision for the 32 kgs.

I'm used to 23kg as I fly LHR-HKG. This limit on the route has been there for a long while. 23kg is not alot considering some of my empty suitcases weigh 6kg alone.

I'm sure some luggage company would make a FORTUNE if they listed on their bags and on their website how much each bag weighed empty... I'd certainly pay extra for the 'perfect carry on' just big enough for everything, but weighing about .5kg when empty. (must have wheels though, as I tend to pack it and check it when returning from a shopping trip!)

Yes, it's been 23KG to the far east in Y for as long as I've been travelling to the far east.
And when travelling with Excess Baggage the limit is 32kg per bag.
If new rules also cover a maximum bag weight of 23kg, then it looks like need to buy yet more suit cases when I ship back home [:(!]

I was being wooed by the samsonite seller in Harrods over christmas. They have an amasingly light hard shell case. Made from carbon fibre or some such thing. It was amasingly light... but so would my wallet have been if I bought it[V]

Obviously adhering to any limits of allowances bought back into the country...[8D][8D]

The 32KG limit is imposed by BAA for Health and Safety reasons. The recent decision by BA to drop their max to 23Kg has nothing to do with any BAA decision so Virgin shouldnt necessarily follow suite. I checked with them and their reply was:

"I can confirm though with regards to our baggage allowance, it is staying at 32Kgs - we have heard nothing to the contrary!"

Though this clearly doesnt specify how long it is staying at 32Kg's.

Cheers

does being a silver card holder and using pe check in make any differnce if you go over the 23kg therehold on a transatalntic flight or am i just using wishful thinking again [:o)]

Yes you are thinking wishfully by which I mean no you are not:). Transatlantic flights use the piece allowance system, so you are allowed 2 pieces @ 23kg (assuming you are in Y):

Two pieces of luggage per passenger, each weighing up to 23kg (51lbs). When added together, the three dimensions of any piece of luggage must not exceed 158cm (62in).

Silver membership allows you to use the PE check in. You do not get the PE luggage allowance.

Perhaps you're confusing it with the extra piece allowed for Au card holders? ;)

When we were in Orlando in November, went to Dillards and bought 4 Delsey suitcases (put the 4 we brought out in the loft), $200 each, but they weigh 40% less than normal cases. Packed them to the top and they were all under 27kgs each. Just think of how much more I could have bought.
