Thanks for the info Richard. I think VS are being very fair offering the vouchers and as one of those who is affected by the extra increases I am very happy with the gesture, because they really didn't have to offer anything at all.
I guess as my flight isn't until June they will still be handing out the vouchers at check in then?

Sorry if I'm barking up the wrong tree.
It's been a long day, what day is it again? [?]

OK payed my extra £40 for my NRT flight. VS are using PayPal as their payment system and you need to print out your receipt and bring it to the airport to claim your money-off voucher.

No chance of the 6x miles via VS Amex then....

My extra is 40 pounds...for two of us? For our flight from dub-lhr-hkg-lhr-dub
I take it then that we don't have to pay for the return lhr-dub leg then?!

Why not? Don't Pay Pal accept Amex then?
Incidentally, on another note, does the VS voucher offer mean a voucher per pax or a voucher per booking? Doesn't make it to clear on the VS site (unless I am being a complete eejit and not reading properly) [:I]
Thanks,
John.

They do, but it costs you. See this old thread.

Thanks for that, Nick [y]. Looks like I won't be using Amex then.
Thanks,
John.

The FAQs seem to suggest that the vouchers are only available to those who pay the additional APD in advance (in the final FAQ).
That somewhat contradicts the press release which states
Does anyone agree? Or am I reading this incorrectly?
The reason I ask is that I have lots of relatives flying in February and not all of them are Internet savvy. Will they therefore miss out on the voucher?
Final question - does anyone know if these vouchers will be transferable?
Thanks,
Neal

Ok.
After Virgins announcement looks like I will have to cough up the extra money[B)]
I can see it being a major headache for them to administer if people leave it until the airport to pay.
I fully intend to pay ahead of time, I donÕt want to waste valuable Clubhouse time[8D] standing in a queue to pay my APD.
The person who I am travelling with is confident despite the information on the website that Virgin will not collect at the airport and the voucher is a clever ploy[ii] to get as many people as possible to pay up ahead of time thus collecting most of the money and write off the rest.
For anyone travelling in Feb it would be interesting to know how Virgin are collecting the money at the airport how long the process takes and also if my friends theory is correct.

The problem is that the link on the VS page does not actually check your booking to see if you have or have not already paid the correct amount. It merely calculates the amount due based on the number of passengers and class of fare that you input.
Hopefully infrequent flyer has hit the nail on the head.
I'm flying in a few weeks, i've just paid the additional APD, however I find Virgin's system which they have put in place very unproffesional. For a start they are using paypal, so the transaction is not via Virgin's website. Secondly once you have paid it does not update your booking to say you have paid the APD (for example it still states I have £80 of APD to pay when i click the link). Finally, Virgin have not sent any emails notifying me of the need to pay, so I too would be interested to see if indeed this is just a half hearted attempt to get people to pay beforehand, I can't see them turning people away at the check in desks unless they pay upfront, it's very bad PR.

The VA website says that if the flights are booked through VH then VH will pay the APD on our behalf. I presume then that VH will invoice me directly.
VH seem to be absorbing the cost themselves
From virginholidays.co.uk : -
For Bookings made on or before 12 December 2006
If you have booked your holiday with us on or before the 12 December 2006 you will not have to pay the increased government tax (APD). This tax increase has been paid for you by Virgin Holidays in accordance with the terms of our booking conditions. Therefore you will not be required to pay at the airport.
For Bookings made on or after 13 December 2006
If you have booked your holiday with us on or after the 13 December 2006 your booking includes the increased government tax (APD). This increased tax charge will show as a separate line item on your invoice. Therefore you will not be required to pay at the airport. Please ensure you have this invoice with you on your day of departure.
Have just paid for myself and friends I am taking on the VS27 in March - I apparently get one voucher worth £40 for the extra I paid for my booking in Upper, and a £20 voucher for the £60 I paid for 2 adults and 1 kid in economy...
Putting aside the tax side of this - questions I have are
1) I have to wait until I get pieces of paper given to me at check in so I can't put towards any bookings until I get back? Any way to do this good as keen to get something back!
2) Am unsure if these vouchers are name transferrable or just given a reference number?? (I made both the bookings and paid for them for my friends)
- anyone know if the voucher can be redeemed online for any future bookings?
3) there has been no email confirmation fron VA or Paypal - seems that there is no realtime linking between the systems.
- Has anyone had email confirmations of payment?
thanks,
I

I got an email confirmation from Paypal, but nothing from Virgin. I even got an email from Virgin today saying I had to pay the additional APD, even though I already have paid the extra.

I printed off the Paypal receipt after I had paid, as that is what I assume they will want to see at check-in.
I also received the normal payment confirmation email from Paypal a couple of hours after making the payment.
It does seem a strange system, why employ a third party (Paypal) to collect this money, surely Paypal will be taking their cut, meaning that VS will have to make up that amount when they pass on the money to HMG? [?]
I assume they could easily create the facility on the VS bookings website to collect this awful tax. [:?][:?]
