Hi All,

Apologies if thsi is an old question.

Do VA have external camera's for the passengers to see what's happening? I've been on a few flights where they have, and take off and landing has been even more fun.

Never seen any, and they turn off v-port for take off and landings, so you wouldn't be able to see it anyway.

Reminds me of a plane with a problem with it's wheels and the pax were watching live footage being shown on the news while they circled around the airport and came in to land.

They do have external cameras but unfortuantely only for the cockpit - which I think is a bit of shame because when I have been on flights with nose and wheel cameras it makes the take off and landing much more interesting!

I think there has been debate on here as to whether passengers are made nervous by such views - but I think that if they are able to turn them off then they would be an excellent addition to the IFE [y]

This has been the subject on many debates, I think this one, was the last one.

I, for one, think it would be a great idea, but they don't even leave the i-map on display any more. [n]

I think the view can be quite daunting the first time you watch an external camera and for some may cause a problem but I would also support this addition to the IFE.

Emirates do this and I've never seen anyone flinch, au contraire, people are interested to bored! Emirates and American leave the sky map on all the time too, I wish VS would. Their policy of switching everything off ages before landing is just boring.

I've seen it on Emirates and Finnair - the quality of EK's camera seemed pretty bad (maybe that was because of the haziness on a DXB-JNB route?) but Finnair's was really good.

ANA and JAL also do have forward looking cameras for take off and landing. It is a pity that no UK carriers do this. Some brilliant views; and it can be re-assuring. Nice to see the runway when low over the on approach tto 34L/R at Haneda for example

I liked the EK camera, I thought it was good to see.

Does anyone know why VS turn everything off before landing? And more often than not a fair way off from landing too! I think EK have their IFE on as soon as you get on (in J or F) If they can do why can't VS???

VS IFE turned off for collection of headsets & safety during landing.

Sadly the fitment of forward/downward camera's on VS fleet would be quite expensive as not currently fitted. The A346 has a taxi-aid camera system (one at the top of the tail & one under the forward fuselage), but this has nothing in common with those used for the IFE.

I don't think safety is an issue for just leaving i:map on as if there is some sort of incident no one's going to think "oh, we've just crashed but I wonder Staines is?" are they;)

I agree VS045 most other airlines keep there map on, so can't see why VS can't do the same. [:?]

I have been on one or two flights where it has been on when we boarded and remained on. I had so hoped it was a change in policy/practice but alas, it was not to be.

Not quite true (well, at least a few years ago ... ). In 2005 I flew to Goa in India with Monarch Airlines on an Airbus A330. I flew out in 'economy' and back in 'upper', and the seat-back screens had two channels showing camera views - one downwards and one forwards. As we departed in the dark I didn't realise what was on those channels until I saw the sunrise as I was scanning the channels.

Flew MON2490 LGW-GOI-LGW for four years(2002-2005) with Monarch on the A330 in Premium Economy and never saw the camera option? Where was it?
