Yes, but I understand that it's a tax imposed on the airlines, who have chosen to pass it on....
Nope, the clue is in the name ;). It's a tax on the passengers, but some airlines have chosen not to pass it on retrospectively.

AndyR - Yes you should already have paid.

Well it's not actually a tax until you travel - according to HMRC as I checked last year. The airlines do pass it on in advance (even before Gordon's latest grab) to save you having to pay it at time of departure.

Of course if you don't travel, you can claim a refund of taxes. Though certain airlines will make and admin charge for the refund (which normally is around the same cost of the refund due).

Thanks,
Richard

We paid online before we left home and got the voucher at check in. If I've read that correctly we paid and additional £20 tax this time but if we book PE or UC in the future we'll get a £40 discount. Good value I think as we're already planning next year's winter jolly.

I understand that we won't have to pay when we go to MCO in October as we have booked with VH and they are absorbing the additional cost.

According to latest news report this Tax may be deemed to be illegal and the goverment may have to pay back £2bn it has already received so far from airlines and tour companies.
I'll think I hold off paying for another 3 weeks just in case it gets scrapped in the mean time.

Except that the airlines will then charge an administration fee which will be more than the APD paid - especially in economy!!

I wouldn't hold your breath. The FTO are bringing a judicial review, but I don't think general opinion is in favour of them winning. We shall see, courts can be unpredictable, but its nothing like a certainty.

Did you book with VH by any chance? If so, they will absorb the cost for you...:D

If not you should have to pay...:)

I've booked with VH and I got an e-mail a couple of weeks ago asking me to pay the tax in advance[:?]

Do I have to pay or not?

Can you still use online check in if you have APD outstanding? Like others, I am going to be paying on the day having shunned the Paypal route.

Don't quote me on this but I didn't think Virgin Holidays were able to charge the APD and were having to absorb the cost the same as any ABTA/ATOL agent. Maybe it's changed or I got it wrong.[:?]

I'm a little confused. From what I've read here, you can pay at check-in (I refuse to use paypal!) - but I don't recall there being any facilities or cash desks or anything at check-in, so how does that work? Also - can I check in online if I haven't poid APD in advance???

From the VH website...

If you booked on or before 12/12/06 you don't have to pay. They will absorb the cost as per the T&C's

13/12/06 onwards, you have already paid it.

Hope this helps

Cat - from the APD page on the VS website:

If I pay at the airport can how can I pay?

Cash will be accepted along with all major credit and debit cards with the exception of Discovery cards. Cheques will not be accepted.

It makes no mention of OLCI, so maybe a call to FC will clear that up.

If you did OLCI and printed your boarding card at home and had no bags where do they collect the APD? Not that I would condone avoiding a Gordon Brown stealth tax[:w]
