print your boarding pass?

Just looking at the VA website to update my details for forthcoming flight and noticed that there is a 'print boarding pass' option.

I knew it was coming but this is the first I've seen on the website.

Yeh from today you canprint your own on LHR/LGW & PVG departures think other destinations will follow

But if you have bags to check you will still need to go to bag drop.

I cannot see this option on my booking. Where's it located? Or is this a something you do after OLCI.

It should work from today, as an option after you have completed online check-in. Then be sure your printer has paper and ink/toner, and waltz straight to security (if you have carry on only) as long as your liquids are in 100ml or less containers, located in a 1 litre or smaller re-sealable bag!

Thanks Juliet it's good to have it confirmed as I couldn't find an actual link to details on the VA site.

90% of the time I travel with hand luggage only so it's good for me.

Will it print a purple boarding pass for UC pax?;)

only if you have purple ink in your printer! [}:)]

actually, my understanding is it will use the same technology currently used by other carriers with this facility, so limited in colour, with a large black and white rectangular security 'scan box' that the security desks are able to scan to check your details are valid for that day's travel.

Ah, yes, NOW I see it! It's when you click on the "Manage my Flights" section on the menu on the left hand side of the page as opposed to the box on the right hand side

Just checked in for tomorrow's VS400 and printed boarding cards, very straightforward, but not any different really to what the dark side have been doing for years.

One slight exception - there is a portion on the print off which "requests" you to complete details of a "next of kin" who is not travelling on the same flight - says it "will be held as a security measure.... for the duration of the flight". Never seen anything like this before, and not information given or sought during normal check in.

Although I can see it ought to be for only laudable reasons it just feels like another bit of data gathering creep - we ask because we can. I really don't want reminding just before I get on a plane that something might happen that means my next of kin might need to be contacted[V]

There's always been a section on the back of VS boarding cards for next of kin info. I dont think it applies to UK passport holders though. I've never filled it in anyway.

Pat - I thought that section was always on the back of the boarding cards, TBH I've never completed it and never had it questioned so haven't looked for a while. It certainly used to be as I remember my parents asking me if they should fill it in although that was a couple of years ago.

Just a quick question you might know the answer to - I usually check in my husband for him when I'm already in Florida (he usually flies out a few days later to save annual leave). When I've normally done it he obviously receives an email to his work confirming this - will the email give him the option to print out his boarding pass or will I have to get the lazy so and so to now do it himself?

The last time I was leaving JFK I was asked to fill in that section on the boarding card. It seemed pointless to me as I was travelling with my next of kin.

Shows you how little attention I've paid to the back of the boarding cards!

There is nothing (no link)on the check in confirmation about boarding cards - I think he'll neeed to log in to manage my flights and do it from there.

I did notice an interesting thing on the VS web site regarding printing your own BC's:

Save time at the airport and print or fax your boarding pass

Not sure how faxing your boarding pass works, but worth a look at Jilly?

Does anyone know if it prints a lounge pass too? I'd love to avoid check in altogether if I can when I just take hand baggage

You wont need it if your Au Elaine, as long as you have your Au card with you, you can go straight to the Clubhouse. I don't think i have had a proper invitation from check-in for years.

I suppose someone may have a fax machine and not a printer but can't imagine having a computer without a printer. Maybe there's an option to input a fax number to receive it, if so that would work for us.

I'll do OLCI for myself and print my boarding card and then I'll know the options for his flight a week later.

It could be useful when you are coming home (once VS launch this across thier entire network) as many people have lap-tops but no access to printers in hotels etc. Maybe you get the option for VS to fax your boarding pass to a specific fax number (ie the hotels you are staying in) [:?]

I've often found the return flight never as straight forward for this reason unless your hotel checks you in for you, which I've asked them to do before now.

I remember when VS used to give you the option to have your e-ticket faxed or emailed. The faxed version looked a lot better then the current email version does.

Elaine not sure about all shared lounges but in MCO I just show my Au card and ticket and they are usually OK. They did once ask for an invitation but the lady just rang through to check in desk and it wasn't a problem.

On that subject, last time I was in Fry's in Las Vegas, I spotted a colour inkjet for $19. Given how much a typical Strip hotel will charge you to use a business center, it's almost worth buying one as a disposable item if you're in town on business for a week.

NOW BOARDING FROM HOME!!

Virgin Atlantic has today launched the facility for passengers to print off boarding passes from home.

Passengers boarding passes can be printed off from home in selected destinations where online check in is available The system is designed to be easy to use and has step by step instructions on how to print off the boarding pass.

Virgin Atlantic already allows passengers to check in for their flights online 24 hours before departure but printing off their boarding passes from home makes it a simple option for all passengers. On arrival at the airport, passengers can hand over their luggage at the ÔBag DropÕ desk and go straight through to the boarding gate.

This new service will also enable passengers carrying hand baggage only to go straight to security, avoiding check-in or Kiosk Check In.

The boarding pass should be printed on plain paper which will have a unique barcode containing all the relevant flight details.

Virgin Atlantic first launched online check in via the Virgin Atlantic website in July 2004 and Kiosk Check In for passengers with the introduction of self service kiosks at airports in November 2004.

Steve Ridgway, CEO of Virgin Atlantic said:
