Just heard it on the BBC News, but can't find a link yet.
Apparently his breath smelt of drink because he has been on a diet. [?]

No charges are being brought against him. I wonder if this story will be plastered all over the news media like the arrest was? I doubt it. [n]

If he was on the Atkin's diet then he would be metabolising fat which means he would be producing ketones exhaled through his lungs which would smell fruity/alcoholic.

That's probably the explanation, but I have smelled many a ketotic individual, and I don't think I have ever confused one with the dry, stale, malty smell of alcohol. As you say, ketosis smells sweet.. usually lemon-y.. [:?]

IF he was over the limit - then IMHO it is indefensible, but the report only says that he has been breathalysed, arrested and bailed to a later date.

He has been bailed to a date in May, rather than being charged and appearing at court in the next few days, so there MAY be more to this story than is being reported.

It's no surprise, Nick, but you were spot on. I'd think the same whether this was a Virgin pilot or someone driving, but well done on urging caution over this early on. [oo][oo]

Best wishes

Good to learn he had not been drinking and yes, let us hope it gets equal press coverage!

Glad to see that the charge was meritless, but I wonder about the pilot's overall health, what with that long-term diet.

Although the BBC are carrying the story, whats the bet the tabloids either ignore the truth or turn it is some way to thier advantage[:(!][:(!]

Good news for the pilot - hope he is able to get over the upheaval to his life

I think the main point is - regardless of press - that certain staff acted in a manner they thought to be appropriate at the time. The system worked.

His symtpoms were exactly the effect of the Atkins diet - on a low carb diet the body has very little incoming "sugar" to burn. So instead of using the incoming sugar the body converts the "fat" in the body - which is laid down sugars from an excess of carbs - and this effect is called ketosis. As a side effect it produces ketones which have to be dealt with by the kidneys( which some say is not good!) and also an "acid" smell on your breath - which can be similar to the smell of alcohol.

Maybe it would have been a good idea for the pilot to let the VS medical team or his management know that he was doing this diet - at least that way it would have made this whole sitiuation a lot easier for him.

He probably will now, but I'm sure few people would have thought to do so before the incident, unless the Atkins diet specifically says that one of its side effects is alcohol-smelling breath...[:?]

Having said that, I believe that they still would have had to check him out if his breath smellt of alcohol. Even with the Atkins Diet side effects they needed to be sure he had not been drinking

It seems that the right procedures were carried out and I would rather somebody raise a false alarm then not bother and let a Pilot who was over the limit fly.

I agree with Buns also, I bet a pound to a penny that the clearance of the pilot isn't as well reported as the supposed guilt was[V]

...just seen the Sunday People today - near full page photo of the pilot concerned at a party with SRB. Story named the "respected pilot", plenty about being taken away in handcuffs......quick mention in the last two paragraphs that his results were negative!

Anyone surprised?!
