Meant to post this a couple of days ago. From the LA Times.

LAX's north runways need to be moved apart, studies say
Airport officials cite safety concerns in seeking to push the north side farther out. Some political leaders criticize the reports.

In a move with potentially major ramifications for the airport-adjacent communities of Westchester and Playa del Rey, officials released studies Friday suggesting that safety issues require further separation of the two runways on LAX's north side.

I thought those two runways were being spread apart as it is.

To the north of the runways is well...nothing,Westchester proper does not start for a couple of blocks.

They moved the Southern runways further apart earlier this year, and are inserting a taxiway between them.

Well, the bad news is that VS arrives on the North "complex" as it's called. As do a lot of the international traffic, Northwest, Southwest, Alaska and others. To the immediate north of the runways is Lincoln Boulevard which runs adjacent to the airport north to Santa Monica.

I just can't imagine, given all the work/studies were commissioned for the A380 needs, that this issue would not have seen the light of day until now. Perhaps there is a political component? In LA? Nah!

True, but Lincon isn't really a major road at that point, they could always close it down and funnel traffic on to La Tijera Blvd ?

To update the debate, the LA Times reports a sixth study has now been given the green light. This is mainly focusing on the question of whether the north runways should be moved some 340 feet towards Lincoln.

It never ends, does it, Bazz? I am amazed that we get anything substantive accomplished in this country of ours.

I guess that there are so many different lobbys and vested interest groups that it is extremely difficult to move something as contentious as this forward? As a regular albeit infrequent LAX PAX, I just hope it doesn't require a major incident to happen before action is taken!
