For me it would totally negate any effort to retain gold. W is meant for business travelers who need/are supplemented by their companies to have flexible tix. Which is why the fare--which often is the same as Z--is worth it. If I am traveling in hope of an accompanying class fare for my partner it is probably NOT a business trip so more likely a Z, S or K fare. Pushing it to W would be one more reason not to retain gold if one usually flies UC for business.
