I've seen him on the TV in the morning at the gym. Talk about a guy who likes the sound of his own voice. [n] Although it was funny watching him make a complete idiot of himself in front of a government minister a few weeks back (even the presenter had to tell him to shut up!)


IF people didn't want to travel at the prices they paid, they didn't HAVE to. Everyone entered into a contract to have a service provided at a set price.

They need to get over it - they did at the time. [ii]

If you decide to have a go, how much do you try to claim?

I don't think anyone disputes that fuel prices went up so a fuel surcharge was in order. The issue is that VS and BA were wrong to set up a cartel and 'price fix'. [n]

I think I will watch what happens before wasting any time and effort in a fruitless chase for 'kompensayshun'.

Interesting, shows the sad state of the nation and how we have become like America with the compensation culture and 'ambulance chasing'. Do you really think you will benefit? Will you really get your money back?

The only guaranteed winners are the law firms that take up the cases. Yes you may (but unlikely) to get your fuel 'surcharge' back, but do you not think this will ultiamtely be passed back on as higher fares or more cutbacks in service to absorb the additional legal and compensation costs? Not exactly mathematical rocket science is it?

As Nick said, this was about fixing the surcharge change points, nto the actual amount. There is a huge compex process that goes on behind the scenes in regards to fuel hedging, even with the fuel surcharges both BA and VS were at a loss given the huge unanticipated price per barrel. But then your typicl person isn't going to know this and will believe the compensation hype passed out by the Red Tops and other papers that think they are decent but in reality are not. BA got it's hand smacked, and VS got immunity. Let it be, I think they both learned the lesson in the form that both their reputations have been tarnished, more so VS given the Bertie Smalls persona.

I think you're being a little unfair on him. As Nick points out, he seems less than confident of success, and does say that the punishment was against procedure rather then price.

After all, us regulars will glady write to SRB's office at the first hint of the IFE not working or not getting our first choice of Meal - and then complain about getting the standard 5000 miles brush off, whilst gladly banking the miles for a rainy day![:w]

And as for the compensation culture - yes, it can go too far. But also it serves to keep businesses honest. Spend any length of time in a country where the compensation culture doesn't exist and you'll see this.
I skied in Korea last winter - a more unsafe skiing area I have never seen. Unprotected sharp edges, unmarked sudden drop offs dodgy safety bars on chair lifts, people picnicing in the middle of a red run under a blind drop. If you injure yourself tough!
Even just walking through the towns, the number of tripping hazards and sharp edges at head height outside shops is unbelievable.
Yes there's a lot of stupid people in the world, but also there are a lot of preventable accidents.
