I read in yesterdays Telegraph about the plans to re-introduce the 2 bag allowance that most other airports outside of the UK have.

I.E a carry-on bag and a purse or laptop bag.

While this is good news, the article did not mention when.

Does anyone have any more news or details on this ?

I read an article a while back in either the Times or Sunday Times travel section. It basically said the airlines were pushing the government hard for a relaxation of the 1 carry-on bag per person rule so they could offer their premium cabin pax the same carry-on allowance that everywhere else in the World [just about] does.

A government minister - cannot remember who, but likely to be the transport minister - said the rule would be relaxed only when BAA could guarantee that the relaxation of the carry-on restrictions would not increase security queues at their airports. Now we all know how efficient the BAA are at running shopping malls, sorry, airports.....

I read the same sort of thing in the telegraph on Sunday, but could not find anything online. Physically, it will take more time to scan the stuff, and now we have had a year + 3 months of Security and BAA only having to deal with 1 bag, I can forsee some arguments around, we need mroe staff etc....

I tend to put the laptop inside the largest carryon bag I possibly can use, then just remove it when I get through. I'd rather take a smaller carryon.

Hence my post about the new UC security channel. One would assume that Virgin have paid BAA to have dedicated screeners (and the assocciated SLA) for the channel. Given that they are dedicated and the amount of UC/Gold passengers is roughtly known per day, I can see no physical reason why 2 bags cannot be allowed.

Also, anything you buy beyond security can be taken on regardless. You could have one bag, then buy a laptop and case from Dixons, a whole load of junk useful items from Glorious Britain and a new suit from Paul Smith and security don't seem to care how many bags you carry.

I read somewhere online over the last few days that CTA connecting passengers at LHR are currently permitted 2 bags with the unannounced trial extending to T4 connecting passengers imminently, if not already.

I will post the link if I find it...

About time too - and as Darren says, the new VS dedicated security channel should aid this coming to fruition asap.
