I am off to Dubai on Wednesday and have K class ticket booked. I was too late to get a sensibly priced Z fare.

Expertflyer is showing J7 and Z5 availability for the flight.

What are the chances and predicted cost of being able to upgrade for miles or cash?

For miles, it's the difference in price between a K and the next fare up plus a £50 change fee. You could then upgrade with 20,000 miles if there is any G availability (which there is for the VS400 on Oct 1st)

You won't be able to upgrade to an S fare now though, with less than 7 days before departure. You'd have to go for a full W fare which wont be cheap.

For cash, again you would only be able to pay to upgrade to a full J fare.

All I can suggest is you ask at LHR as there might be some special upgrade prices on the day depending on how busy your flight is.

Thanks,

I have had another thought. Not sure of my chances but will talk to Virgin in the morning :-

I have 26000 miles. I can purchase 14,000 miles for £255 and then get a reward flight UC to DXB. The question is what are the chances of Virgin transferring the taxes and surcharges from my K ticket to a reward ticket :-)

So you mean you would 'buy' a new G ticket? Obviously you will not be able to get a refund on your actual ticket cost for your K fare but you can get back any taxes if you cancel. You will however have to pay the taxes for your G a the time of booking and then claim the other back.

You also can't cancel just one leg of a K fare as that would leave you with a one-way K fare coming home which you can't do.

Oh well, £1212 to upgrade to a W class ticket and then 20,000 miles to upgrade to UC......

Agent was going to call me back regarding using a new reward ticket for the outbound leg but never did call .....

Ouch!

I'd ask on the day at the airport whether you can do a miles or cash upgrade. The answer still might be no, but it doesnt hurt to ask and if the J cabin is still that empty they might be happy to take your miles.

Thanks,
