Correct! Now your friends could have had their CO miles credited to their VS FC account then use the miles in FC to upgrade the VS flight. The key here is planning on how you want to spend the miles when you earn them.

What's the 'exchange rate' for Continental miles to VAA-FC miles? I've got 30,000 Continental miles that I have no use for; how do I go about transferring the Conti miles to my VAA-FC account??? Thanks.

You can't - what mcmbenjamin means is that they could have credited their flights WHEN they flew them... you cannot just transfer CO miles to VS.

There MAY be some convoluted way (CO miles to one of the hotel programs and back out to VS, but that would be a real pain and you would loose quite a lot in the transfer...)
