Collecting miles on partner airlines question

Hello,

If I was to book a continental flight using airmiles (actual airmiles not virgin miles) can I then apply the flight to my virgin miles account and get partner miles?

I cant see why not as airmiles are actually 'buying' the ticket for me but 'rules' etc may prevent this.

Can anyone confirm or deny?

I would say that the simple answer to that is, No. Reward flights will never be points earning flights by definition. They will show up in the fare bucket as reward flights and therefore no points will be awarded.

This is made clear at the bottom of the front page of the earning miles page on VS Website.

All flights excluding flying club miles plus money and reward flights

well the airmiles flight is not a flying club miles and money or flying club reward flight so in theory it should be fine, or does the line mean virgin m&m and anybodies reward flight.

its just not too clear on this one which was why I was after clarification.

I stand by what I said above - it will all depend on the fare bucket that your flight is booked in - if it isn't in a miles earning bucket, then no miles.

I can't see Air miles tickets being booked in revenue buckets, but have never done it myself, so don't know for sure.

There are some AirMiles-like schemes that do book revenue tickets. I've had tickets booked, for example, with a Canadian scheme called Avion, which has booked revenue tickets with VS (L class, helpfully!).

I've no idea with AirMiles themselves - would be interested to know.

Answering ones own question is seem by some a bit dodgy, but well anyway....

I actually went ahead and booked a BA EDI to LGW & virgin LGW to MCO flight using airmiles as there was no Continental flighs available via airmiles any more. Airmiles bought all the tickets in X class.

Airmiles provided me with the virgin locator number and I was able to log into the booking and add my FC member number. i was also able to log into the BA exec club and add this booking to it.

I have just returned from that flight can confirm that I got the correct number of miles for an virgin X flight to MCO and even more surprisingly, the 125 BA miles for the domestic leg!

So it seems that in this instance airmiles booked tickets are treated just the same as cash booked tickets as far as earning rights are concerned.
