From the VS FAQ:
Q What are e-tickets?
A We're getting rid of paper tickets on selected routes:

Between the UK and US
Between the UK and Japan
From the UK to South Africa
From the UK to Hong Kong and Shanghai

Book one of these flights on this site and all your details will be stored electronically and we'll email (and fax if a fax number has been provided) you a receipt containing your booking reference and flight details.

All you need to do is bring this receipt with you when you check in - all your details will be there already.

What could be easier? And there are a host of benefits:

No more lost, misplaced or even stolen tickets.
Faster check in - all passenger details are ready and waiting.
You can change your flight shortly before departure (subject to availability and charges may apply; you must go to the ticket desk at the airport of departure to confirm any changes).
It's a more environmentally conscious way of operating, with far less paper being used up.
And don't worry if you arrive at the airport without your receipt, just ask a member of staff at one of our ticket desks and they'll look up your booking reference for you and can print you a new receipt if needed.

HTH

Cheers

Thanks.
I found that on the VS website after I posted the question.
We booked through an agent so and did not get a confirmation fax/letter but, as far as I can gather, a reference is a reference whether it is on a VS letter or not.

You will often be asked to produce the credit card used to make the booking. I don't know if this is a requirement, but it is a way for VS to double check that it is the correct booking.

If travelling on a E-ticket you will need to have a some form of receipt, like a print out of the booking to show to the security agent before you check in!

You wont be able to proceed to check in without havin a sticker placed on your passport by the security agent.

If you dont have this then the agent will just send you to the ticket desk to get a print out of your booking.

The agent should give you your e:ticket confirmation.
