As mentioned in my trip report I was going to look at fares for flying into LAX and returning from LAS, as we like a spell in Palm Springs followed by a few days in Vegas & it saves the drive back to LAX on the last day, plus we live close to LGW. I just obtained quotes on VS web site for outbound on Fri 25th March '05 & return on Sun 3rd April '05. Results are follows:-

In & out of LAX: £4,406.60 (for "Upper Class lowest")
In to LAX out of LAS: £13,179 (again for "Upper Class lowest")

I'm amazed that returning from LAS makes the whole fare three times more expensive!! Any ideas?

Could be the following:

* Little or no availability out of LAS vs. LAX
* VS don't allow "open jaws" on your ticket/route, so it looks like two full-blown J singles back-to-back

Those are the most likely reasons.

As for me, I'd prefer to fly the cheaper fare, get the better service (bigger bar, ifbt), and have a shower in Revivals when I get back! ;)

Cheers,

I have done flight's to both LAX and SFO ret LAS for the past 2 years one thing i have found is if you call FC they will help you more than a PC can, When we did SFO ret LAS Apr this year we pay'd £845pp in PE, our flight's for next year out JFK (PE) ret LAS (UC) come out at £1895pp + $504 A west JFK-LAS 1st class but we are yet to book them.

I can't see why it would cost an extra £8,800 i would have thought around £400 on top if that, Yes they are the only airline to fly LON-LAS-LON direct but i cant see why that would put the price up that much.

Cheers

I normally fly via LAX or SFO to maintain my gambling habit [:p]

Doing some research myself the last few days, and you can get a CO codeshare from LGW via MCO and IAH for £1798 return per person.

that should be Upper Class Suite on the VS codeshare, and first class on the 4 x CO flights.

a bit of a pain with the stop overs, and not so many tier points earned, but this works out quite a bit cheaper!

tempting!

Thanks for that Richard. Re the CO codeshare, how do I set about getting these quotes? I went on to continental.com (the UK site) and plugged in the dates but it only returned CO operated flights, no sign of any VS operated ones?

Hi Vegascrazy, it's a bit tricky - but here goes:

go to http://www.expedia.co.uk

select the flights tab, and select "multiple destinations"

select:

flight 1 LGW-MCO morning (leaving date)
flight 2 MCO-LAS evening (same leaving date)
flight 3 LAS-MCO morning (return date)
flight 4 MCO-LGW evening (same return date)

select business class

and search!

You may need to play around with dates, and make sure you have a saturday night stay

this fare for example is currently showing outbound 19th May, inbound 22nd May, outbound on VS27, inbound on VS28, showing as Z class tickets.

Incidentally this trick can also be used to get cheaper flights via LAX/SFO and selecting the HP flights you want rather than the "official" VS codeshare flights - the same actual flights come out cheaper!

Hope this helps - let me know if my description above needs any further explanation :D

Rich.
