Probably a really stupid question, but why is VAA's airport code 'VS'?

Is it because (probably answering my own question) 'VA' would sound too similar to 'BA' in announcements etc?

Probably more to do with the fact that VS are young and Varig got there first

And yes. 'VA' and 'BA' would sound very similar over a PA system in a noisy airport. I wonder how many Brazilians that ones confused???
