Can someone tell me if this is landside or airside? I am transiting through from Cape Town and want to know if I can use it.

Secondly, a more rhetorical question. On my flight down to JNB, there were some people behind me in the queue going on about how they had been upgraded. Sure enough there they were in PE with me even though Econ was only about 60% full (if that). How does a family of 3 swing that kind of upgrade??

Cheers

Not 100% certain as haven't flown to Johannesburg.

However, I believe the correct abbreviation of the city's name is Jo-burg, not J'burg (which is the shorthand for the small city of Johnsonburg in North-Western New Jersey) ;)

In regards to the upgraded pax, this could be for a number of reasons that you simply couldnt guess. Here are my top upgrades:

1) Upgraded to Business with Iberia because we requested extra legroom and the translation seemed to get lost on the return leg to 'needs extra legroom' Those seats had gone on the plane so we were upgraded

2) Getting knocked out of reserved seats, getting delays, a bad flight and refusing to accept the same on the return. We refused and said that we booked that flight because we wanted it, we were not being put on another flight and that if our seats had been given away that that they would have to upgrade us, and they did.

3) Being a Woman travelling alone - although thats not applicable to your question.

The point is, there are several reasons why people can get upgraded for what is seemingly like no good reason. If it happens we should just be thankful that the airline still gives away upgrades, i see less and less of them.

There is also a "competitive upgrade" where if they think you fly frequently with the competition they upgrade you to make sure you remember them fondly. I've had this with other airlines before now!:)

The lounge at JNB was airside the last time I passed through but thats about 4 years ago and from the pictures shown of the present lounge it looks to have changed.

More jealous than anything! Thanks for JNB info.

I hope I get an upgrade coming back, those were the smallest PTV screens I have seen...

The JNB clubhouse is airside on the upper floor of the international terminal. If you are transitting from Cape Town presumably you'll have to switch terminals anyway.

'Tis my favourite VS lounge. Watch out for the magically refilling beers... most I have managed is around 8, although I was finding it difficulty to keep count after the 6th.

The food is great too, and the staff are very friendly.

PS. And if you have 8 beers and are flying on an asthmatic Airbus, you'll find yourself crossing your legs in pain as you crawl to cruise altitude for about 40 minutes out of JNB :)

The JNB lounge was very nice, but quite small and packed. I think I have a new fave lounge now!(was a tie between NRT and SFO).
