VS have confirmed they're donating some items to the raffle. Thanks VS.

Any more hands up for the 12th? I'll need to make a booking on the bowling alley reasonably soon, and it sounds like three lanes will do at the moment.

It now looks like I'll be in Glasgow unfortunately, but I wasn't doing the bowling anyway.

Add one to the list please Pix, my brother is coming with me now. We are both easy about the bowling - will make the numbers up if needed, but will wathc from the bar if you have plenty of players.

Will do Nick.

What's your brother's preferred 'handle'? I'm knocking up some name badges for attendees so we can all point and giggle at each other...

Decker has done a fantastic job of scoping out the options for our social; his report is below

Social Event - Reconnaissance Report

Sunday 17th May 2004

With the upcoming social event we decided to scope the various options currently being thought about for the drinking/bowling/eating on June 12th Mrs Decker and I took it upon ourselves to visit the area so we could report back on the options available. It transpires that these are wildly dependant upon whether we intend to walk or drive...

The Three Magpies - a "Steak and Ale" Pub.

This pub is not too far from the main Heathrow entrance on the main Bath Road and is currently surrounded by roadworks. There is plentiful parking and outside seating. Quite why it is the "three" magpies escapes me - 3 for a girl? Anyway a bit of a trek if on foot. Seems "standard".

The Pheasant

Walkable from the Bowling but on initial approach was not impressed. In the middle of a housing estate behind the main Bath Road. However upon entry to the hostelry was approached immediately by the manager who upon learning of my quest provided an almost VS level of service. They have a separate restaurant area where they can accommodate tables of up to 30 people. On Saturday nights they have a disco from 20:00 to 01:00 so perhaps our younger members will like it!

Quite a trek again. Not particularly attractive pub with very little parking in an unattractive area... probably great if you're a regular but...

RESTAURANTS
Hmm bit of a problem here - we couldn't find ANY of the ones Pix suggested. We are convinced that some of them MUST have closed. Where the Chilli Zone and Sharma Tandoori was MEANT to be we found a large Indian Restaurant seemingly called VII and a Portuguese Restaurant but again this is all a bit of a trek and on a main road.

Simply Nico - http://london-heathrow.crowneplaza.com/ ... di01a.html
Can't normally go wrong with Nico BUT it will work out a tad expensive and is also a trek from the bowling being the M4 side of Heathrow rather than the A4 side.

Now departing from script.... IF (and a big if) we're planning on trekking then behind the Holiday Inn (perhaps a mile or so away) are a nice pub and a good looking Indian restaurant in close proximity.

King William IV pub

http://www.pub-explorer.com/gtlondon/pu ... sipson.htm
and the Achari Indian Restaurant

Having said that - right next door to the Bowling is the Ibis Hotel - http://www.ibishotel.com/ibis/fichehote ... otel.shtml it has a bar a restaurant and a £45 a night room rate at the weekends CURRENTLY with availability.

Decker, good of you and Mrs Decker to give up you Sunday for the onerous :D task of visiting pubs on our behalf ;) (Is there no limit to the man's generosity you may well ask?)

This makes me even more sorry I won't be able to be there [:(]

Thanks for that report Decker,

My initial reaction is the Ibis sounds like a good idea - even without the FC miles. £45 per night is a good deal.

As a suggestion to throw in the pot, how about we meet in the Pheasant in the afternoon, followed by Bowling, then either (1) trek over to the King William IV & Achari Indian, or (2) back to the Pheasant for drinks & an evening meal. The late night boozers will probably retire to the Ibis bar.

Bowling is now booked. We've got three lanes for 2 hours, starting from 6pm.

Apparently there's someone on the door charging admission - but if we let them know we have a booking (under the name of Shaw), you get in for free. So, if you're planning to go directly to the bowling alley, avoid paying extra at the door.

Also, I've taken the plunge and booked into the Ibis. £45 was too good a deal to miss!

Bazz... someone had to take one for the team :-). Like the ideas Pix. Think it'll be cheaper for me to stay at the Ibis than taxi back and fro from W5!

Decker - Excellent work. Impressed that you'd sacrifice a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon to visit hosteleries on our behalf. Very good of you old bean ;)

Pix - the plan of Pheasant > Bowl > either (1) or (2) will be fine - although I'm strangely averse to that ex&^@#~& malarky :D Am also confirmed at the Ibis (via Amex card, so still some FC miles off it :D) - anyone know what this is like?

Bazz - [:(]

Time to add this one in the Events & Itineraries section :) (BTW, shouldn't the topic be "V-Flyer Group Social" now? ;))

Cheers

This is all looking very nice.

Much as i'd like to join you gents for some after hours drinking at the Ibis bar, it looks like i'll be hopping on the tube home, since I have a travelcard already, and the zone extension to Heathrow is gonna cost me about 2 quid.

What's the prize for top bowling score? :D

The original thread of this topic has been updated accordingly, and I've added a countdown script to the homepage (good suggestion Decker)

Nick, Slough/Windsor is some distance from Heathrow - you know that, right?

Yes Pix, not a problem - in all probability I will be driving, so will be hitting the coke. (Liquid variety;) )

If I fall off the wagon, then it will be a taxi.

The cancellation policy is also very good, so if the Heathrow Marriott or Renaissance offer a better deal in the mean time, I will switch.

Nick;)
