When either of these moves are made do I understand correctly that the FF number changes?

If this is correct do Virgin CC need to know the new account number for miles to be credited or is this automated in some way?

Yup, that's correct.

The old FC # and the new FC # should be linked automatically, but it never hurts to let the VCC people know

All of your accounts are linked together. I have sent miles from AmEx to my old Silver nubmer before and they have arrived in the correct account.
