Reports of a large earthquake in LA ?

Just being reported on Sky News..... Large earthquake in LA...

Yawn, 5.8 according to the usgs. However, there's been a spate of aftershocks around the 3.8 mark also. centered on the LA area. Enough to get you out of bed, but not enough to spill your beer

Apparently there were 2 minor quakes (2.5ish) in the San Francisco area the day before we left a couple of weeks ago. We didn't feel a thing and only found out because it was on the local news.

On that basis I have to conclude that the ride at Universal was better[:D]

It's a very slooow news day.

I'm here in LA (Burbank), and it was no big deal. USGS has lowered it to 5.4 which is not that substantial unless you live in very old mud-based housing in some 3rd world country, then it sucks. Here everything is built out of wood so it bends. I'm about 25 miles ESE of the epicenter, and it was 8 miles down. It felt here like being on a really glassy lake in a very small boat (10') and having some VERY LARGE MAN fall in the boat.... so it shook a bit at first, then rolled until the lake was glassy again. First shaking lasted about 25 seconds, all stopped at 1 min.

Now, had that happened in the wee hours of the morning like they usually do? THAT would have been scary since you are awakened from a deep sleep. But in the middle of the day - no big deal. I'm sure lots of supermarkets had some clean up to do, but nothing fell over here.

I agree with bardgal. Am in Palm Springs today(hot, hot and more hot!) and the quake was about 70 miles from here. It was certainly a jolt but not very disturbing. The national news coverage, however ... can you say 'ridiculous hype'?

Just got home and caught KTLA's (Ch5) BREAKING NEWS that had been going on since the quake this morning, however finally just signed off so their ratings darling FAMILY GUY (love Stewie!) could air. The things they were covering was almost laughable. Some guy's garden block wall in Chino fell down and that was some of the worst damage.

I guess it's because this was the biggest quake since one of the 5.0+ aftershocks from the Northridge quake in '94. Such drama. Ontario airport did look as though there was some plumbing damage as there was video of water pouring from the ceiling, and some old abandoned building had been yellow-taped since some old glass fell onto the sidewalk.

*I just hope this isn't a fore-shock of something bigger. [:0] That would be bad.

This is actually a bigger deal right now ...

While it looks like the main tourist parts of the park will be spared, it's been touch and go, and there are some nice communities on park land just around the edges which may well no longer exist by end of week.

I was on the phone with Mrs Scrooge, all she said was earth quake, nothing bad...I am heading down there in the morning, so knowing my luck the big one will be around 12.30pm
