I frequently travel with IT kit in the hold.... usually very well packed in specialist cases and Ive never had a breakage (always take laptops though)... I know your hard drive is being replaced but its always worth bearing in mind what data may have been on there in the past and would you want this in someone elses hands even if you dont need it now.
My drives are always bitlockered or encrypted in some other way if ever they leave the doors of my office let alone going into the hold of an aircraft ....
