Nick - read my original post. I was miffed at being persuaded to move to Virgin and then 2 minutes later the route closes - you call it going seasonal. Unfortunately my business CANNOT go seasonal. Can you see why I talk about abuse now? No? Maybe read all the posts on PPRUNE - Stansdead was my main detractor but hardly a serious foe. The wit and repartee of a dead fish. I beat him 6-0 (without cheap insults).
LOL - I did read the posts. Beat him 6-0? Hmmmm, maybe I read the wrong posts. [;)]
I'm a bit confused, is it really such a big deal to transfer your business back to the worlds favourite or another carrier?
Regardless of the answer Cellnet I am sure that you can appreciate that in these difficult times, decisions have to be made that aren't always to the benefit of everyone. I am grateful that my employer is taking steps to preserve my career as I am sure you would be in the same situation. Whilst the debate on pprune is keeping me entertained on a dreary Tuesday afteroon, the aggressive nature of some of your postings I feel is uncalled for. At a time when people globally are losing jobs and homes surely we should be more understanding and polite to one another. That costs nothing.
Peace to you and your family

Curses! beaten to it![:w]
You echoed my thoughts,
Cellnet,I understand that you will be annoyed when VS asked/persuaded to provide your business needs, although 3 months is a long time and when you were approached, maybe VS weren't thinking about pulling the Maurutius summer service.
However, surely it's as simple as saying 'Thank you but no thank you to Virgin as they can't provide your needs' and go to an airline that can provide your requirements.

I agree with Southenbelle, it is good to see that VS are taking plans to use their aircraft on routes that will have them flying full and keeping their profits and people in jobs. I am afraid VS isn't running an airline to suit your (cellnet) or anyone else needs!
Here's a thought how about using VS in winter and BA in summer! Job done! [y]

Nottingham Nick - reading is not quite the same as comprehending. You have proven that with your postings. Southernbelle, thanks for being the voice of reason (no sarcasm). Yes of course it isn't a massive deal to switch though it is a pain to renegotiate (from what will now be a very weak position). My biggest gripe, however, was the way that this decision was handled. Leaked all over the place - and so causing lots of conflicting rumours. Then officially denied and finally the official press release that talks about Manchester, Barbados and 308 other destinations before very cryptically mentioning that MRU will go seasonal. Which aggressive postings do you think were uncalled for? I was very direct and cutting with Stansdead in response to his cheap, crude abuse and foul language - for that I don't apologise. Check his other postings and you will see that he is a plain arrogant bully and picks fights with anyone that doesn't doff their cap to him as well as few who do. I have the both intellect and the courage to stand up to him and that is all. Peace to you and your family too.

Indeed it isn't. The great Albert Einstein once said 'Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.'
I know what I read - you know what you read - we can agree to differ about who made who look silly. [:D]
Hope you enjoy your trips to Mauritius - whichever carrier you use.

Thanks I prefer his other insightful quote 'e=mc2' - as relevant (relative?) now as it was 103 years ago. I have been 'Moderated' and I'm banned from pprune for 7 days and have learned the error of my ways. I would like to use this forum to retract my comment where I called pprune a 'toilet'. I meant sewer (you don't find rats in toilets).

Not quite true as I had a flat mate (uninvited) called Roland (which was a rat) who only used the toilet to gain entry to the appt. Ended up putting bricks on the toilet seat but then he just ate through the wall. Clever little s**t he was.
Anyway I digress, Cellnet you really go out your way to make friends don't you[:w]

Anyone got any advice on my dilema of a cancelled summer booking as above??will they honour reward flights on to another carrier?
The best thing to do would be to give Virgin a call directly. Any advise/info we give on here would not be 100% accurate where as VS should be able to give you correct info plus they will be able to advise/discuss all the available options.
Thanks,
Neil

Move to the red side...
I've done it via JNB it is a very very long day! Took us about 20 hours total to get there!
What would have been shoddy is to have just cancelled the flight and refunded everyone. As it is, re-protecting passengers on another route, albeit not direct is a whole lot better.
As for not using the BA route, seeing as they only fly 3 times a week using a 777, perhaps BA declined to accept the transfers, keeping all the seats for their own?

I think VS are doing the right thing, there is never going to be a perfect solution to suit everyone so they have to make the best out of the options they can.

I rest my case. Shoddy treatment of passengers. Don't bother getting them on a direct flight but rather deflect them to your nearest alternative route.
I agree with the others here cellnet, VS have done the right thing and handled it well. As Darren points out, BA (and Air Mauritius for that matter) may not have been willing to take the VS passengers.
SA will probably be more willing to accept the passengers on JNB/MRU given the links between the carriers
What alternative would you have preferred? VS to continue operating to MRU and then in x months time, have to lay off y amount of staff as they attempt cutbacks whilst maintaining a full route network? I would hope that even someone as hard to please as you can realise that the decision that VS has taken is the best for the company, its staff and, in the long term, its passengers.
