Hi Michael,

No worries. I totally agree with what you've said.

I tell ya - like I said here, it's only a matter of time before we're stripped nekkid and put into stasis before being allowed to fly ;) Of course, that'll be alright, because it's "anything in the name of security"/"as long as it keeps us safe" *sigh* [V]

Cheers

Although the funny part is, is that a report just came out and it said that travelers are still no safer than they were before 9-11 (even after the millions spent on airport screening!).

It's been added on to the security questions now about lighters when travelling to the US.

A pax actually kicked up a fuss and couldn't understand it wasn't VS just having a laugh about lighters (he actually said 'This wouldn't happen on BA')- it was a TSA ruling and if we want to fly into America we have to do as they say.

Being a non smoker i really couldn't understand what the problem was - the pax had one of those 50p lighters from an off license. Could they not just buy another in the States?

As I have said in other posts the cabins are too hot to sleep properly, so I would see it as a positive advantage to comfort as well as safety if we all flew nekkid.

And as for all that jiggling during turbulance.........

So, when you check in at LHR do you have to leave the lighter behind before you board the plane and is this strictly enforced from the UK??

Ok, slightly older thread, but it seems that it's finally on the VS website that this applies ex-UK too - see this link:

Cigarette lighters including butane, absorbed-fuel (Zippo-type), electric/battery-powered and novelty lighters (for passengers travelling to and from the USA and Barbados destinations)

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr! [:(!]

Nope. My Dad landed in LAS last week with a lighter on him (accidentally, of course). Although warned by the pre-check in security, there was no further check (not sure what one looks like on an X-Ray)

After a recent New York trip a colleague of mine had three lighters in his hand luggage and they weren't spotted! Why he had three I didn't ask ...

Loved this story from the travel insider:

Before a recent flight from somewhere south US to Washington, a group of FBI agents were searched, had to remove their guns and ammunition for checking before being allowed through security. All the guns and ammo were returned to them but a TSA employee spotted a lighter on one of the agents: 'I'm sorry sir I have to confiscate your lighter' !!!
