Looking at domestic connection flight from LHR,
Arrive at LHR at 19.25 on VS239, there is a BMI leaving for MAN at 20.50pm.
On the assumption we'd be getting our bags chk'd through from HKG to MAN, so just need to clear immigration & change terminal would this be feasible & give us enough time..?

To immigration & terminal change add:
VS punctuality stats (2008), HKG-LHR:
34% Early to 15 mins late
24% 16 - 30 mins late
30% 31 - 60 mins late
12% 61 -180 mins late

edit: Only 10 mins allowed in above for taxi time to Gate.

Last month I had my bags checked through from Tokyo to Cork (but was not checked in on the ORK leg) The flight landed at 16:30 on to one of the stands around gate 18 - I rather think gate 22. Using Flight Connections for the first time in years I was at the check-in desk airside in T1 at 17:10. My onward flight was at 18:05 and yes, my bags made it also.

Flight Connections at that time was relatively quiet and hassle-free unlike first thing in the morning when long-haul flights world-wide converge on LHR. You would also have the advantage of being checked in for the BD leg at HKG

Can they do this? Obviously improves matters if so,
and given the evening arrival in UC, quick departure from A/C and Flight Connections across to Term 1, I should be do'able (subject to any delays).
If VS book us to this BD flight & VS HKG leg delayed assume they'd need to put us up for the night?

Flight connections can be a breeze at that time, as HL pointed out. In fact, with the much reduced traffic these days, I did a T1 to T5 clean through in about 35 minutes a couple of weeks ago. You do not go through normal immigration, get on a little bus which is efficient, and even in late morning, quite sparsely populated. Even if you have to pick up a boarding pass, I'd still say it's OK, all things being equal.

Like Bill S said, the biggest danger comes from the inbound being late. I was about an hour and a half late arriving in LHR, and no amount of efficiency in transfer is going to help you when that happens [;)]

So it boils down to how much risk tolerance you have for delays. IIRC, the last time I booked a connection through LHR on the same ticket they would not let me book the combo I wanted because it entailed a connection time of 1:20. Minimum was 1:30, they said. Not sure if this will be an issue for you.
