This looks bad, unusual tho I think that a plane has ended up in such a bad state after actually landing and then skiding. I am not an authority on this, but the last time I can remember anything similar was the manchester fire (I know this was pre-take off)

Reports on the BBC suggest the number of survivors is high.

All passengers survived the crash...apparently the plane was struck by lightening. The A340 has an excellent safety record, I don't think it will be tainted even after this crash landing.

that is amazing,looking at the pic's you would figure a high number of deaths,well glad im wrong on that one.

with news being what it is today it makes a welcome change to see a news story end with a sigh of relief, hope the cabin crew get recognised for their skill in helping the passengers to safety.

(Ironically, I booked flights through YYZ today) Only "up to 200 people on board" sounds like a light load for an A340 though.

Apparently 309 people were on board - original estimates of 200 were a bit off.

Spookily, you can use the ATC link in the "live ATC" topic to log on to the Tornoto ATC, and then specify yesterday at 16:00 local for a 30 minute period - you even get a weather radar map of the area.

You can hear ATC diverting people, commenting on the fact that "a plane has slid off the end of the runway". They're all very calm and collected on the ATC, however right after it happens you can hear shouting in the background as the s**t hits the fan.

Given no one was injured I thought I'd post this.

It just goes to show that modern planes are safer crashing than their older counterparts

I for one cannot remember a plane crash/fire where all pax and crew survived!

Well done to all crew/emergency services involved

Quite a miracle nobody was hurt badly after looking at the video and pictures, I never realised the A340 had such a good safety record.

I have just read a PAX report from this incident:

'At some point the wing was off. The oxygen masks never came down. The plane was filling up with smoke.'

She said one of the flight attendants tried to calm passengers and tell them that everything was OK.

'And yet the plane was on fire and smoke pouring in. I don't like to criticise, but the staff did not seem helpful or prepared.'

So that report doesn't bode well for the crew. I guess all this happened though in split seconds. So hard to imagine being in that situation, but also so thankful that everyone was ok physically.
