Downtown Disney checkin - overweight baggage?

Just used DD checkin after a fortnight VH. It worked great - we were PE and it only took 10 min. Just wondered what happened if your checked luggage is overweight?? There didn't seem to be anyone weighing the bags so presumably you get told the bad news at the airport later??

Hi and welcome to V-flyer.

On US routes VS use the "piece system" so weight is not the overiding factor as is the case (no pun intended) with other destinations.

As much as I have tried (and that is easy with shopping in the States:D:D) I have never managed to get anywhere near to 32kgs (i.e. the weight of two cases if you were going to spain) which is the trigger point for airlines saying it is too heavy to lift.

I am sure all luggage taken at DTD is weighed when it gets to MCO.

Buns - I must introduce you to my mega suitcase. On the last trip this was 32.5 kg and only then because I put all of the shoes in the other case . I blame drugstore.com for having such stupidly cheap big bottles of things - have you see how little they charge for quart bottles of Listerine? So several of them go in to start [:I]

Decker, travelling to the US for Listerine is surely a little OTT... [:p]:D

We always use the Disney checkin, and we have never had a problem with overweight bags, despite some of them being extremely heavy:D

I was asked to take some stuff out of one case and put it in the other once at the airport checkin desk[:I] but it only ever happened when I was doin EC.

I've never been close to the weight limit - Still I dont pack loads of stuff that I wont need.

I really cant see how anyone needs that much stuff for a week or two

I generally buy toiletries locally - I realise this does not suit all
but you save a lot of weight and worrying about leakage!
In the US all the same brands seem available as over here

Also on my last FL trip I bought mostly sampler sizes of stuff for $1 each and that was enough for the two weeks.

Agreed - unless you're moving, that's a heck of a lot of stuff;

The limit to the US is effectively 64kg/140lb in Y/W and 96kg/210lb in J - that's the weight of a woman and a heavy man, respectively!

Although slightly irrelevant if flying to the UK (which if checking in a downtime disney you will be) as the UK law now does not allow baggage handlers in the UK to lift or move cases over 32kg, so you may get it on to the plane, but it will have to sit there at the other end.

It still applies - those figures are made up of 2 x 32kg bags (max economy limit = 64kg) and 3 x 32kg bags (max Upper limit = 96kg).

VS don't accept any bag more than 32kg.

Mrs buns did point them out to me when we were in a Walgreens in the States recently:D

i have to admit that visiting drugstores whilst in the US (seeing how cheap everything is and the extent of the range of stuff you can get) is proving to be one our holiday highlights[:I][:I] (sad I know)

Ahh I cheat.... drugstore.com and have it delivered to the hotel, that and cheap contact lenses. It's not like I go to the US to shop for toiletries but if I'm there and I have baggage allowances I may as well use them

Us too! We love browsing the aisles for hours! In NY just after Mama Mia, where can we go... a bar..a club...hotel? Nope, across the road to the drug store - fantastic!!

BTW, checked in DTD and was overweight (back in the dark days of EC) - got a stern look and a warning but the very nice man let me off anyway - phew! Didn't fancy unpacking all the Ibuprofen (240 to a tub), Contact Lense solution (1/2 price for double the size for pity's sake), Head'n'Shoulders etc... in the car park! Sad or what?

Ooh - after just 2 weeks short of my year, my 100th post has arrived. I can now qualify for my Silver Kit I believe - sounds interesting. Did my stars go up?

Congratulations on hitting 100

Hopefully you've not been "holding out" on the Silver threshold, as you'll still need to buy a basic kit to upgrade to it...

All the info you need can be found by clicking here. Unfortunately, information on the "levels" won't be available until Pete arrives back, but it's basically £10 for your initial Red kit, and £7.50 to upgrade it to Silver.

Remember, you get immediate access to the extremely handy V-Tool, Availability checker as well as luggage tags & cards/lapel pins, etc. the second you buy your first kit - so there's no need to delay.

What a great idea Decker, I've never thought of this before! I usually take minatures and then the first chance I get I hit the drugstore for all my toiletries. How long do they take to deliver? I'm thinking of placing an order before we set off so that the parcel will be waiting at the hotel when I get there. Do you think this is feasible?

Normally you're looking at 2-3 days UNLESS you get traditional Listerine in which case they need to ship by road (alcohol content = explosive) so it depends how close to the East Coast you are. Normally I'll place an order on say a Thursday or a Friday for delivery to the hotel, fly Saturday and it will be with me Mon/Tue. I have had stuff waiting for me at the hotel before though. I just called the hotel to warn that the package would be there before me

If I'm getting Listerine I prefer to be there for 2 weeks to be safe...

I still say its OTT for mouthwash;)

but if your there anyway..!!

Oh it's not just mouthwash... Advil, Mega Aussie shampoo, Q-Tips, Sonicare replacement heads, contact lenses etc etc[:o)]

They do weigh the bags whether it's in front of you or behind closed doors.

And a passengers definition of heavy (Unless you're a LOS/PCH/Carribbean pax) is very different to the airlines definition of heavy.

When i was at check in i cannot tell you how many pax would say "Ooh uh..its really heavy it might be over 32..." then on the scales it's around 15kgs. Unless you deal with things that are 32kg on a regular basis i don't think you truly know how damn heavy that is!
